The cable USA Network has announced that The Starter Wife is no more.
The Debra Messing vehicle first began life as a miniseries (pictured) filmed in Australia with a cast including Judy Davis, Miranda Otto and a number of other locals in supporting / cameo roles (Rodger Corser, Madeleine West, Aden Young, Leeanna Walsman, Mark Holden). It aired here on TEN to mixed success.
In the US the 2007 miniseries attracted more than 5 million viewers and went on to earn 10 Emmy nominations, including a win for Davis. But the spin-off averaged just 2.4 million viewers, well down on other USA shows such as Burn Notice and Monk which regularly pull in around 6 million.
In a statement, USA described Starter Wife as a “critical and creative success,” and added that its December season finale served as a “satisfying conclusion” to the franchise.
Maybe they shoulda fought harder to hang on to Judy Davis!

Pity. I really enjoyed the mini-series and thought the series would go on for a long time.
Such a shame – it goes without saying that Davis is brilliant, but I think that Messing is a brilliant actress who lights up the screen in everything she is in. Back to Will & Grace then! 🙂
Nooooooooooooooooooooo
This was great.
Davis skipped 1 episode and her character is written out in the last.
…damn… this was good.
Guess it’s back to terrible movies for Debra.
Any chance ch10 will air the rest of the series? or do we just wait for the DVD?
