Marital bliss becomes Seinfeld’s reality

Jerry Seinfeld's new reality project on marriage will end his 11 year absence from network television.

jerry_seinfeldJerry Seinfeld is returning to network series television as creator and executive producer of an NBC reality series that looks at the lighter side of marriage problems.

Guest appearances, including on 30 Rock and Curb Your Enthusiasm, notwithstanding, it will end an 11 year absence in making network television.

Seinfeld‘s Columbus 81 Productions are teaming with longtime Oprah executive producer Ellen Rakieten to create The Marriage Ref, a series that will feature opinionated celebrities, comedians and sports stars offering commentary and advice to real-life couples enduring “classic marital disputes.”

“I see it as a pro-marriage show,” Seinfeld said. “It shows everybody else is doing the same silly things.”

“This is not a therapy show, it’s a comedy show,” said Seinfeld. “After nine years of marriage, I have discovered that the comedic potential of this subject is quite rich.”

So far however, there is no guarantee Jerry will appear on-screen. “I have no plans to be on it,” he said. Then he added, “We’ll see.”

“Jerry called us up and told us he had an idea,” NBC’s Ben Silverman said. “He flew in to sit down with us, and he and Ellen pitched the show. We were laughing the whole time as they went through the concept. As Jerry noted, some of the greatest comedies in history have been about marriage.” Including I Love Lucy, right…?

“Picture well-known people weighing in on a couple’s relationship issues and deciding who is right and who is wrong right on the spot, like a referee,” she said.

  1. Seinfeld is a genius so who knows it could work. Not sure why he’d bother though just incorporate all the comedy into some new stand-up not some garbage reality show.

  2. Sounds like that dumb show I saw on Channel 7 daytime TV (not Judge Judy). Three celebrities are on the ‘jury’ and give their opinions on the defendant. Really dumb concept. Has fail written all over it methinks…

  3. Sounds like it’d be a mess of a program.

Will it be stories of couples, then the couples and some d grade celebs sitting around, all trying to be funny and witty making comments giving advice??

Or will it be that style of program with different d grade celebs who have watched a video making comments, trying to be witty, all intercut with each other.

For some reason i’m thinking of that really bad show Tough Crowd with colin quin, of d grade celebs/comedians talking about politics who have nothing to say, don’t know anything. trying desperately to be funny, and out do each other with jokes.
