Networks extend News bulletins

Seven and Nine News tonight deliver extended 1 hr bulletins nationwide. And here's news for fans of 24 too.

9hitchNetworks are still adjusting their schedules to reflect the enormity of the Victorian bushfires, now over 100 deaths and in human lives, the country’s biggest ever natural disaster.

Tonight both Seven News and Nine News have scheduled one hour bulletins from 6 – 7pm to air nationally.

Both A Current Affair and Today Tonight will air at 7pm live on location.

For Seven, Home and Away will air at 7:30pm followed by one episode of How I Met Your Mother.

Nine resumes normal programming at 7:30pm with Two and a Half Men and a special 1hr Nine News bulletin at 10:30pm in place of Crime Investigation Australia.

Updated: TEN News will be 90 minutes in every state except Perth. WIN News will air at 7pm with ACA at 7:30pm.

Seven also confirms 24, which did not air last night, will now screen next Sunday February 15 at 10:30pm for 1 hr.

  1. Very weak of Seven for not showing 30 Rock! Why on earth they showed A Country Pracitce when they could have a had fresh episode of this comedy gold is beyond me…

David, will next week’s episode be the Oprah episode that was missed this week? Also, what other changes will be made to the schedule for this week?

I do have to say, however, that I give full kudos to the networks for updating their EPGs, it was very good amongst all the changes (though shame on Seven for saying 30 Rock was on 7HD)

  2. looks like 30 rock has been replaced by another news bulletin, guess they’ll just show it next week like they are doing with 24, although the EPG shows it is still on at 1am on 7HD, so will be interesting to see if that is actually true.

  3. 9’s coverage on saturday was a joke and a disgrace.

@Neon – I agree, even with a tragedy the networks still want to make $$, but they also dont want to appear insensitive, which is why all of them have extended news coverage tonight.

  4. the EPGs are also a locational thing, where i am 7 has updated their EPG for tonight with the home and away and himym change, however 10’s is wrong the 10HD one says what the printed tv guide says and hasn’t got the specific minute thing and the regular 10 one just got rid of the simpsons and bumped everything else half an hour forward eg, sytycd= 7:02-8:07, GNW= 8:07-9:09 and dexter=9:09-10:48, so clearly it is wrong.

  5. @goffy

there was talk on the radio that 9 was “deciding if an apology was necessary” after their news on Saturday. there were heaps of complaint into the stations.

on saturday while most of the fire dammage was being done to kinglake and marysville. 9 news melbourne only covered it for 8 minutes and then moved onto a story about people that went to the beach but then went home because it was too windy. and then after that moved onto repeats of funniest home video while the other networks were doing live news telecasts specials.

  6. Tim, this is a site about television. How the networks perform in the face of this major news story – and how they keep their viewers up to date on their schedule changes as a result – is relevant.

I’m already tired of hearing the holier-than-thou “come on people, people died so shut up about (insert subject here)” cries all over the internet.

Yes, the networks have more important things to worry about. Making money. You don’t see them running these extended bulletins ad-free now, do you?

  7. Oh come on people… people have died in this tragedy and you’re worried about EPG’s being up to date? The networks have more important things to worry about.

  8. 7 did an update this morning, but it’s not what has been reported.

The 4:30pm news went until 5:30pm, MASH was still advertised.
How I meet your mother is only 30mins from 8pm, but everyone says it will be 1 hour long

Common TV stations update your EPG’s if you are going to change things around on us.

The viewers are really being forced to the point of being hostages watching stories about the fires over and over.

If the stations cut the TV ads maybe I would have more understanding, but the media is still running ads and making a profit out of the lost of life/property during these fires.

  9. If the networks would use the simple technology provided to them by the digital age and update their EPGs to reflect these changes, viewers would perhaps stand a chance of seeing the shows even wants them to see.

Seven’s EPG never changed last night – it, along with all on-air promos, acted as though the schedule change wasn’t happening at all. Viewers were completely left in the dark.

  10. I reckon 7 should play a double of episode of 24 next Sunday to make up for the episode we lost last night… Australia is now getting further behind then America… Come on 7, I know u couldnt fit it in last night due to the extended news coverage, but do the right thing by the 24 fans, and give us a double episode…

  11. OMG, 24 will be on next Sunday night. Steady my heart. I can hardly contain my excitement. Thanks for dumping it last night Seven. I actually did stay up ’til midnight since Seven ran something worth watching in Air Crash Investigation.
WIN will probably push ACA back to 7:30 following their regional news bulletins.

  12. I was a bit disappointed that 7’s special buliten was at 1030pm and not 930pm. 24 is a far greater show than bones.

Anyway i guess ill have to be patient with 7’s erratic programming.

That said, it is good that the networks do take time out of their regular schedule to cover events such as this, the fires were devastating and me missing an episode of 24 is nothing compared to the loss that many victorians have incurred.

  13. jerome, i watched the whole 9 news coverage and there was no apology, apparantly they announced after it that they decided against it. which is quite disappointing IMO considering how bad and disrespectful what they did really was.

they said that they will apologies “with actions not words” and give a first class coverage tonight. which i guess kind of passes.

  14. ahh yes. didn’t think of the 4:30 news. thanks andrew B

maybe an option would be for the networks to do news 4:30 – 7 like 7 did last night in melb.

  15. @ Jerome: Best to start news at 6 rather than earlier on a weekday. Both 7 and 9 also have 4.30 news, it would not surprise me if they end up increasing 4.30 news as well, as they have done so in the past for major events.

  16. wouldn’t it just be easier for 7 to cancel M*A*S*H, put DOND at 5:00 and 1hr news from 5:30. and for 9 to cancel antiques. and just say that that will happen all week with this out of the guides and sometimes EPG’s. no one ever knows when it is on or where their shows are. if they did a consistent week i’m sure they would get more people to see their news.

btw, did anyone see if 9 news’s apology went to air last night. their news started a few mins before 6 so if they did it first thing i might have missed it, or did they just decide against it?

  17. There was a Ten News Update not that long ago, and the presenters said that the First at Five News will be 90 minutes, instead of the usual 60 minutes.

Can anyone confirm this, or am i hearing things?
