Nine launches bushfire appeal

Channel Nine will run a Bushfire Appeal in conjunction with the Day Night cricket match on Tuesday.

vicfireChannel Nine has announced a Bushfire Appeal to be run in conjunction with the Day Night cricket match on Tuesday.

Updated: So far 181 lives have been lost in Victorian fires, with a toll expected to rise.

The appeal in conjunction with Cricket Australia and the Commonwealth Bank will run throughout the telecast from Adelaide Oval.

Viewers will be advised how to make donations through various means throughout the telecast.

Every dollar donated will be committed immediately to provide critical relief.

Nine CEO David Gyngell, said today, “The devastating bushfires that are currently burning across Victoria and NSW, are among the worst natural disasters to occur in our country ever. Channel Nine and Cricket Australia are committed to doing all we can to help the victims in their time of need.

“We will be calling on advertisers, corporations and viewers to give what they can, to help those affected get back on their feet as soon as possible.”

Hopefully Nine will consider forwarding all its advertising revenue during the match to the appeal too.

Australia vs New Zealand One Day Match. Live – Tuesday February 10, from 2pm.

  1. Good to have a Bushfire apeal but it in Whittlesea for there fires. But here in Gippsland we had a fire that ripped through houses and lifes .This apeal is for all the fires in Northen Victoria .Us here in gippsland will not get anything like that concert and support. Thats right we are only a small comunity to and supply the power t o Victoria and the fire is on the mines door step .Fair go, p-off local.Thats all we hear of on the News is the north victoria fires not gippsland. And how much does Gippsland see of the donations ? Yes I am not afraid to speak out coz i hear it from all of people around my area .

  2. What an absoulte tragedy.

We only live 5 minutes (by car) from Whittlesea and today we again are covered in smoke – the smell fills our houses. The wind is cold and the nights are freezing – all these people living in emergency accomodation, halls, tents – they must be so cold.

You can not even imagine what these people have gone though, what they’ve seen, what they heard. Apparently there were people who had to watch their livestock run around the paddocks on fire – apparently the noises from the animals was just ………. you couldn’t imagine it. So many poor inoccent animals died as well – not to mention our beautiful native wildlife.

I know that the Whittlesea Anglican Church is also taking donations – they ask that all donations already be sorted into bags ie: boys size 3, girls size 6, shoes, toys, etc. to make the sorting process easier for them as they have so much to go through already.

Dig deep – the effects of these fires is going to be around for a very long time – well for our lifetime at least! We will never forget this.

  3. Please inform us if there is a need for clothing (we have an Op Shop) and would gladly assist but we live on North Coast NSW and would need to know an address and if the needs are already been met by those closer – having too much can also be a problem for organisers. If we can assist, what would be the best form of transportation and contact person – address.

  4. Its just horrible people have died fleeing in their cars and in their homes with no chance of survival words cannot describe
My thoughts are with all the victims and survivors

  5. Of course Gyngell has to mention Sydney fires as well….which have had 0 loss of life and impacted about o.0001% of what the Victorian fires have…but we cant be alienating the TCN viewing audience thinking its just something for Victoria can we???? !!!

  6. Nine have also joined in Conjunction with Woolworths/Safeway Supermarkets National Drought Action Day 2009.

Not sure how they have contributed yet, but Natalie (forget last name) The host of The Farmer Wants a Wife, is on the publicity posters and screensavers as well as the Nine logo!

  7. Johnson: Not sure why this should be “bigger than the Boxing Day Tsunami appeal” when something like 250,000 people died in that event (not to mention those who survived and were left with nothing). Are Australian lives worth so much more than those in other countries?

But I suppose, true to form, the Australian networks will turn it into an all-sing-all-dancing ratings-grabbing event.

  8. It seems to me that there are two appeals ongoing. First, the National Australia Bank donated $1 million and set up an appeal account. Then the Victorian Government made another one, to which the Commonwealth Bank donated another $1 million. Surely the two can merge?
R: 3AW’s Neil Mitchell said this afternoon that Victorian media outlets are planning a joint appeal. This could be bigger than the Boxing Day Tsunami appeal in January 2005 because more companies are involved this time (TV, radio and newspapers). In 2005, Australia Unites: Reach Out to Asia involved just the ABC, Seven, Nine and Ten networks.

  9. I was thinking exactly the same thing R. I live in north queensland and am surprised none of the networks are not providing more coverage of it this evening. I know it is ratings season and all but still.

  10. Good on them. Its great to see everyone launching appeals so swiftly.

I imagine given the scale of this tragedy, we could even see the networks doing a joint telethon like the one that we had after the tsunami
