one80project winner headed for MTV

A story of rural students and a teacher who tries to jolt them out of apathy will be made into a one hour drama for MTV Australia.

one80The third one80project search for emerging filmmakers has been won by Sydney filmmakers Reuben Field and Dean Bates.

Wauchope, is named after the NSW town with a population of just a few thousand. The story is based on a class of high school students facing an uncertain future and a teacher who tries to jolt them out of their apathy. You can see an excellent clip here.

It will now be made into a one-hour drama of 3-5 minute segments, to be screened on MTV Australia and Optus mobiles this year.

The pilot was selected by a panel of 10 including actors Teresa Palmer, Sibylla Budd and Marcus Graham before a crowd of 1200 on Sunday night in Sydney’s Harmony Park.

“I thought all of them were really special in their own way, but Wauchope really stood out to me because it was shot incredibly beautiful and it has such soul and heart,” Palmer told AAP.

“I got goosebumps watching it, and it was the only one of the top 10 that I really felt connected to.”

Another pilot, Staying – about a group of people dealing with life after the death of a loved one – was voted the people’s choice winner. Director Andrew Garrick from Sydney received a prize pack to help him further develop the idea.
