Peter Overton for Melbourne too?
More cost cutting? Blood letting? Is Peter Overton set to read Nine News in Melbourne too?

Peter Overton is so popular with Nine executives, he is now set to read the news in Melbourne too.
Well, that’s what you could be thinking if you were watching Nine Melbourne this afternoon.
Nine News aired a newsbreak on Kevin Rudd’s rescue package which ended with a plug for Overton “weeknights at 6.”
Clearly the break came from Sydney but failed to air the right closers for the right markets.
Not long afterwards Nine crossed live to the Rudd news conference (as did Seven) with both Overton and political reporter Laurie Oakes and financial expert Ross Greenwood. Good to see major news being covered live.
This time the sign off was better, ending with a closer for NineMSN.
Peter Hitchener remains Nine’s Melbourne newsreader, regardless of what slipped through the system today.

at the end of today tonight a few weeks ago they showed the end of seven news sydney
Is it me or does Peter Overton look really, really weird in that picture?
Obviously a mistake, but 9 should be thinking about what they are doing as 9 news is now 3rd after 7 and ABC.
The execs might love him but I sure don’t. >_> Brown-nosing his way to the top.
Are you owning up to something, Matt? 🙂
As a regular channel nine Melbourne viewer im use to them crossing to Sydney new readers for Breaking News.
We had a glitch here in Brissie too. Days ended with a brief glimpse of Overton, before the Brisbane feed kicked in.
Dumping Hitch? I think it will shoot 9’s ratings in the foot. Melbourne has had enough troubles with people thinking their news comes from Sydney twenty two years ago!
We <3 Mal Walden…
Overton looks like a younger Hitchener, perhaps they were checking to see if anyone noticed 🙂
Talk about mountains out of mole-hills?
i was plesently suprised to see peter overton covering the stimulus package as i didnt now he did much work outside 60 minutes, let alone the nightly news in sydney.
heard about the stimulus package and rate cut on sky news and thought the fta networks might cover it live, as its somthing effects everyone, flicked through the channels and yes nine, seven and abc did have live coverage. good to see
They better leave Peter Hitchener right where he is thank you. Nine Melbourne has always been so stable as far as news readers go – I can only remember 3 – Sir Eric Pearce, Brian Naylor & Peter Hitchener – and I am almost 50yo. Peter H. should hold that position until he is ready to retire – in his own time. Otherwise, I for one, will go elsewhere for my daily news.
Hopefully, just a slip up.
Nine is hanging the station together with string and wire – what do you expect!?
I think it was human error
everyone makes mistakes in their job, including me
matt
i’ve this sort of thing happen before, i remember seeing a news update ending with a pitcure of Mark Ferguson when Peter Hitchener is the Melbourne newsreader!
