“My wordy yes indeedy do di do” – Chenille (Magda Szubanski, Fast Forward).
TV Tonight today launches a reader survey to recognise the most memorable catchphrases in Australian television.
Shows like Fast Forward, The Comedy Company, Kingswood Country, Kath & Kim have given us phrases that have a life beyond the television screen.
And there are also lines we remember fondly from The Price is Right, Big Brother, Who Wants to Be A Millionaire and Countdown.
And what about the News, Mr Squiggle, and Skippy the Bush Kangaroo?
This survey offers you a number of choices in comedy, game shows, light entertainment, variety, news and children’s TV. You can choose one in each category or add your own.
The only definition of a ‘Catchphrase’ is one that has had repeated use, whether scripted or impromptu in a TV show.
The survey takes about 5 mins to complete.
To participate in the survey go here.
Entries close this Saturday February 7th 2009. Results will be published next week.

@ Lisa – exactly. It doesn’t matter how many ads/shows were made, but the quality and widespread use of the phrase that denotes a Quality Catchphrase.
I’d also like to add “Bugger’ to the list (from the ads).
I think for me its a quality catchphrase if it transcends into everyday use by ordinary people and my god “Not Happy Jan” fits that bill it was used by so many people after that ad.
‘Hello, good thanks’ was a good one from Effie on Acropolis Now but what about the other classic: ‘How embarrassment!’
If anyone votes for “Touchdown”, I’ll jump through their computer screens and rip their bloody arms off!
I vote for “Harden the f*** up!” courtesy of Ronnie Johns
There are some great extra quotes accruing in votes so far.
Not Happy Jan and Where the Bloody hell are you were in ads, plus not sure we can really say they were used more than once. I don’t remember any more than one ad for Jan!
Not Happy Jan.
Earthquake, catchphrases from TV ads would be a whole other survey I reckon.. there must be thousands to choose from in that category 🙂
And of course, Derryn to this day denies ever using the phrase “shame shame shame” he insists it was a myth perpetrated by ‘Darren Hunch’ on Fast Forward
The best –
The universally used “the little fat kid from Hey Dad” from The Late Show
Where was the category for tv ads?
I would’ve voted for “where the bloody hell are you?” 🙂
number 1 should be.. ‘Gidday Mate’
“Look at moi” would probably be the most famous Aussie one
We all know that “Say Hi to your Mum for me” was stolen from Back To The Future!
