The Simpsons renewed to Season 22

“Best. 20 Years. Ever." says FOX as it renews TV's longest running animated series again.

simpsonsxThe Simpsons, already the hit the longest-running animated series in primetime TV history, has been picked up for 2 more seasons to a staggering 493 episodes.

Gunsmoke holds the record as the longest-running primetime narrative series, on the air from 1955 to 1975 with 635 episodes.

With this 22nd season renewal, The Simpsons, which debuted in 1990, will easily become the longest running.

The pickup came after 20th Century Fox TV closed a new deal with James L. Brooks’ company Gracie Films. The voice cast was already secured for two more years as part of their most recent contract negotiations.

“Best. 20 Years. Ever.,” is how FOX announced the news. Hard not to agree.

(and yes we know the pic is a parody from one ep….)

  1. Well I have to agree with the season 10 argument, but I watch simpsons in english and spanish, and gotta say that in spanish they haven´t lost their awesome, intelligent parody style. I hope for tons of new seasons for the simpsons, still faaaaaaaaaaaar better than the rest of animated tv shows.

  2. The Simpsons’ first 8 or 9 seasons haven’t been beaten in quality as of yet which is amazing in itself. However since about season 10 the show became unrealistic and unrelatable with at best average jokes. The show seemed to get worse every year up until the time of the movie in 2007. For me season 19 was the best in since 10 and the show was more improved with the leap to HD in season 20, the heart soul of the show returned. Although the writing still isn’t as clever as it was, but who knows hopefully it returns to its best by season 22. If it doesn’t than it will still always remain one of the best shows of all time.

  3. i reckon they should slow down on the simpsons and take a hiatus or whatever, work on futurama for a few seasons then come back with the simpsons so they have time to gather new ideas, story lines etc and we would appreciate it much more

  4. I’m with David. The picture he used to illustrate the story is more likely to be from a parody of an episode of the series rather than from the Ullman Show. I seem to remember a Simpson’s episode where they parodied the early incarnations of the characters. I still have an old video with an episode of the Tracy Ullman Show and a GMA segment (featuring an Ullman/Simpsons short) from January 1990 when TEN were hyping the show as part of their new youth driven line-up… the Simpson characters (and their voices) were certainly less refined in these shorts, but not as far removed from what we see depicted above.

  5. BTW Is there really any enmity or rivalry between The Simpsons,
Family Guy/American Dad! & South Park etc?
The Simpsons made a few in show comments about FG/AD! “plagiarism”; There were the “Simpsons did it” lines in SP re new ideas… are they just taking the
Micky or is the whole animation scene getting just that little bit incestuous,
& bereft of novelty?… Like the rest of TV… 🙂
