At the Movies: April 1, 8

This week on At The Movies Margaret and David will review Monsters and Aliens, the new animated film with the voices of Hugh Laurie, Stephen Colbert, Will Arnett, Seth Rogen and Reese Witherspoon. David Koch also has a cameo in the film. What will our trusty reviewers think of him?

Juliette Binoche will also be interviewed for Summer Hours.

Next week Adam Eliot’s new feature Mary and Max is reviewed along with an interview with the Oscar winner himself.

INKHEART – Directed by – Iain Softley. Starring – Brendan Fraser, Paul Bettany, Helen Mirren, Jim Broadbent, Andy Serkis. Based on the book by Cornelia Funke, Inkheart is a timeless adventure tale of imagination that centres on Meggie, a young girl who’s father has a secret ability to bring characters from books alive when he reads them aloud. But when a power-hungry villain from a rare children’s fable kidnaps Meggie’s father to bring others out of the boundaries of fiction, she and a disparate group of friends both real and magic embark on the kind of adventure she has only read about in books to save him and set things right.

MONSTERS AND ALIENS – When California girl Susan Murphy (REESE WITHERSPOON) is unwittingly clobbered by a meteor full of outer space gunk on her wedding day, she mysteriously grows to 49-feet-11-inches tall. The military jumps into action and Susan is captured and put into a secret government compound. There, she is renamed Ginormica and held along with a ragtag group of Monsters: the brilliant but insect-headed Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D. (HUGH LAURIE); the macho half-ape, half-fish, The Missing Link (WILL ARNETT); the gelatinous and indestructible B.O.B. (SETH ROGEN); and the 350-foot grub called Insectosaurus. Their confinement is cut short, however, when a mysterious alien robot lands on Earth and begins storming the country. In a moment of desperation, The President (STEPHEN COLBERT) is persuaded to enlist the motley crew of Monsters to combat the alien robot and save the world from imminent destruction.

SUMMER HOURS + interview with Juliette Binoche. Directed by Olivier Assayas, Summer Hours takes a thoughtful look at one middle class French family, made up of very different people, and the ways in which they deal with their past in a rapidly changing world.

April 8
GOOD – starring Viggo Mortensen and Jason Isaacs, Good is based on the play by CP Taylor, and is the story of a man’s journey during the Nazi regime, set against his chaotic private life. Plus interview with Viggo Mortensen

MARY AND MAX is a claymated feature film from the creators of the Academy Award-winning short animation Harvey Krumpet. Plus i/v with Adam Elliott.

JCVD – is a French crime film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as himself, a down-and-out action star, whose family and career are crumbling around him as he’s caught in the middle of a post office heist in his hometown of Brussels.

THE BOAT THAT ROCKED has a star- studded cast – Emma Thompson, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Kenneth Branagh and Bill Nighy, and is the story of an illegal (pirate) radio station operating on a boat in the North Sea in the 60s.
