Carey: “I was drunk before Denton show”

Fallen footballer Wayne Carey says he was "probably drunk" two days before his appearance on Enough Rope in which he apologised for his binge behaviour.

wcAppearing on The Footy Show, fallen footballer Wayne Carey expressed remorse for his bad boy behaviour and claims he is making recovery after hitting rock bottom.

Carey says he hit a low after an incident at his Port Melbourne apartment during which he was arrested. He also made a startling admission over his appearance on Enough Rope with Andrew Denton last year.

“Even after all those things had happend I went up to Queensland I continued to drink,” he said. “Drink at my brother’s house, have a few beers…. I went on the Andrew Denton show. Really, I think probably two nights before I went on the Denton show I was probably drunk. And really went on there still emotionally unfit.”

In March 2008 Carey fronted on the ABC show to admit he had a drinking problem. At the time Denton said he believed the interview was part of Carey’s recovery: “He’s gone into counselling and I actually believe this interview is part of that process and that he is actually admitting publicly, as well as to himself, that he’s got problems.”

Tonight Carey conceded ‘a light went on’ sometime after the Denton interview.

“You felt good while you were having a beer with your brother and stuff and friends. It got to the point where you realised that wasn’t helping anyone.”

He acknowledged to host Gary Lyon there would be many who would view his latest comments with scepticim.

“I don’t care if you don’t believe me Gary, or anyone out there,” he said.

“It’s really a case of me fixing myself. And feeling good about myself. I don’t want anyone’s sympathy.

“I’ve still got a long way to go, mate. I’m not sitting here saying I’m Peter Perfect now. I’m certainly not. But I’m a long way further along than I’ve ever been as a man before.”

  1. yeah, well ….. i’m one of those people who don’t believe you, wayne.

er, you’re shopping around a book deal, aren’t you?

i guess it helps if you offer up a little contrition to sweeten the deal.

“emotionally unfit”? … for goodness sake …. just honestly admit to all of your transgressions over the years and the hurt you have inflicted on so many people. sheesh, next thing you’ll be saying “emotionally unfit” is a disease …. and something you had no control over.
