Farmer wants a scriptless romance

Stop the presses. A reality contestant says producers manufactured scenes of romance just for the cameras.

farmerNo surprises today in an article that sees a reality contestant crying foul over the situations they claim were manufactured and producers who defend they weren’t.

It’s practically routine in the genre, and in 2009 most people really oughta know this. If they don’t they should arm themselves with info before they send in an audition form.

23yo Ashley Joel, one of the final two women vying for the affections of Farmer Wants a Wife‘s Andrew Hall, has accused producers of creating conversations and situations rather than documenting reality.

She told news.com.au, “We’d go on dates and when they had enough material they’d say, ‘That’s a wrap’ and cut it off.

She recalled being told: “We want you to talk about you today Ashley, not this”.

“How are people supposed to be people? I wouldn’t do it again,” she said.

Farmer Andrew said, “I don’t think they do justice to the reality of farming and the day-to-day lifestyle.

“But I have no regrets.”

Executive producer Ben Ulm rejected the claims, saying they only helped the farmers and girls articulate their feelings for the cameras.

“We don’t manufacture emotion, it’s about them articulating it,” he said. “We’re not pretending it’s observational documentary and I think the general public accepts that. We’ve had a marriage and engagement (on past series), so it does work.

“The situation is not natural, but the emotions and relationships are valid (and) we have to get these emotions on camera, get them to think out loud.”

  1. Do people actually think reality TV is real. It’s either scripted or heavily edited for dramatic effect. If reality shows like Farmer Wants A Wife, Biggest Loser or Border Security were shown live, it wouldn’t be as interesting to watch.

  2. If you watch the show carefully there would be up to 15 mins of new footage added every week, the rest is made up of commercials and a torrid of annoying flashbacks.

  3. Please do not tell me that “Reality TV” is not reality TV but scripted TV instead.
Chuckles – might have to get actors equity card when I apply for dance, wife, singing,bb etc
