Memo: please pull this show

It isn't often this site actually recommends a network pull a quality series off air.

tug-o-warIt’s not often this site actually advocates for a network to pull a quality show off air.

But TEN should really yank The Office. It’s just being wasted now.

In just over a week it will air at 1:50am in the morning. The show was previously screening on Sunday nights but has been bumped later and later due double episodes of Dexter. This Monday morning it screens at 12:50am after two eps of Dexter, but a week later it also has to wait for highlights of Telstra Swimming Championships. That means it ends at 2:20 am!

Surely only fans with IQ, TiVo or a trusty DVR are actually going to see these first-run episodes? The Office is an Emmy winning series, how on earth can a network see this as worthwhile?

TEN would be better off pulling the series and giving it a better timeslot when it has the time.

Compared to Seven’s elevation of Scrubs to prime time it’s all the more stark…

What do readers think? Should TEN pull The Office rather than give it a 1:50am timeslot?

  1. It appears that The Office has been axed on Ten. Last night it wasn’t on air. Next week the Yahoo7 TV Guide shows the lineup as Rove then Dexter then F1.

Looks like your prayers have been answered David.

I’d prefer it to be on air.

Why is it good enough for RL and AFL fans to watch the majority of games on Pay TV, but fans of foreign car racing get to watch every race on free to air?

  2. i was just looking around the australian itunes store and apparently network 10 have joined on with them and one of the shows they are offering is the office, but on the itunes store there are season 4 episodes that are further ahead than the 10 screenings. right now there are 10 episodes available but channel 10 has only just aired number 7 last night…. lol.

  3. The fact that Two and a Half Men gets a primetime run on 9 (and pulls big ratings) is very very sad. The Office is infinitely funnier. I’m sure the majority of fans watch it via other means anyway.

  4. One thing I do enjoy about shows such as The Office, Scrubs, Everyone Loves Raymond, Will and Grace, The Ellen Show, Location, Location, etc. being on late at night, is that it delays the horrible Guthy Renker, and other brain numbing infomercial programs which clog the TV, which until recently started as early as 11.30!
I say, bring on the late night sit-coms repeats!!!

  5. Ten is absurd for pushing this back further and further. Its bad enough this isn’t even given a chance to work but pushing it to the same hours as infomercials is just insulting. Although I have to ask if Scrubs could be considered primetime? Is 10:30 pm primetime? Whatever its considered it shows seven should perhaps be given a shot with this. Try it on Friday nights. C’mon TEN!! Seriously!!

  6. 8:00 Wednesdays!! Now!! Give it a shot, like Scrubs! If it fails

@@ Ryan, i didn’t know that, that really pisses me off! Thats what channel 7 also did with Family Guy! season 4 in the US is actually split up in Australia into season 4 & 5. Season 5 in US is actually season 6 in Aus now, with 4 episodes cut off at the end because they stopped airing it. Those 4 episodes are now at the start of season seven (season 6 in US), thus the last 4 eps aren’t on it, i’ll hav to wait for those to be released in season 8 DVD (season 7 US) , which will no doubt be altered because of the mess its already in. If it fails, screen marathons of it on weekends

  7. Ahhh this breaks my heart this is my all time favourite show I wait all week for it but as mikey said as a huge fan I rather it be on then not at all I will follow it where ever it goes, and that way it will at least hopefully be released on dvd and on that note I am still waiting for season 3 part 2. I cannot understand why this show is treated so badly what can we do to make channel 10 take notice…..?Name it I will do it!

  8. Obviously, this is a beyond rediculous timeslot for this quality show. But, I tape all latenight TV shows regardless how late anyway. And as a lot of others how said on here – at least it doesn’t delay DVD releases any further than Ten’s poor programming already has. We can all then enjoy it without commercials and stupid Guerrila Gardeners promos on the screen. Seriously! It disappointing that it never gave it a chance – screening I think only the first two episodes (from the first season, which was it’s worst) in primetime and never trying it again in a decent timeslot.

  9. Sorry David, but there is no chance that ten would have the guts to try this show in any other time slot. Most people who want to watch the Office would record it. I’m sure they would rather do this than wait about another 8-10 months or so (which is how long ten took for them to air the Office last year).

  10. of course ten should pull this show, its one and a half seasons behind the us and anyone with a half decent internet connection can see all of the eps anyway, plus ten should release the whole seasons instead of in halfs like they did with season 3.

  11. At least they are airing the show. Better late than never. And better to get them shown so the DVD can come out. Ch 9 should be doing something similar with ER – but even if they don’t I’ll be buying the 15 season box set in the US in September in any case!

Maybe the networks should have a used by date to air shows they have the rghts to, then the DVD can come out regardless of whether they’ve shown it or not.

  12. Im a fan of The Office, it should be in prime time. Early morning screenings is a waste for such a quality show. Surely they can dump a prime time show and air The Office. Come on ten, listern to the fans and do the right thing.

  13. @mikey re: “Does this apply to all international distributers?”

    Sadly, pretty much yes.

It’s the reason Season 3 was split into Part 1 & Part 2 in Australia when it was released as a whole season in the US. Ch10 pulled the show halfway through Season 3, leaving the distributor to only release half the season. That’s why some of the Special features on Season 3 Part 1 DVD refer to episodes that weren’t included on that set (Joss Whedon interview) – They were supposed to be all on the same set!

It’s also why we got Alias Season 1-4 DVD’s at pretty much the same time as the US, but then there was gap of 2+ years before Season 5 got released on DVD, because Channel 7 delayed Season 5 for ages!

The list is pretty much endless! Pushing Daisies is another example, and that DVD finally has a local release now because 9 onsold it to Foxtel who have started playing it this month.
