There are just some stories that never date. A harangued son and his mother with Alzheimer’s is one of them.
So it’s no surprise that even after all these years the ABC has announced Mother and Son will get an American adaptation via Alchemy Television.
Wonderfully created by Geoffrey Atherden, the sitcom ran for six seasons on Australian screens (42 x 30’). Local versions have previously been produced in UK, Chile, Sweden, Denmark, Turkey and Greece.
“Mother and Son has an enormous following in Australia and we’re delighted this classic show will hit the US,” said Katherine McMillan, ABC Commercial Sales Manager, Formats.
LA-based Alchemy Television’s previous credits include Coco Chanel, starring Shirley MacLaine, 18 to Life, Ben Hur and You’re Wearing That?!
God bless Ruth Cracknell! Her scenes with Garry McDonald were comedy gold.
Cue the oranges…

I am curious as to how this will be. It’s a solid concept, time has passed since the original, so why not. This is the sort of material that is fine for another interpretation. May not work, but it’s definitely worth a shot.
Although I am in the camp of.. f**k it why not try a new version. If it doesn’t work at least something was tried.
The UK version happened but disappeared without a trace after a few episodes.
I understand the oranges-at-the-funeral was actually based on a real life incident…
Don’t know what to think of this.
I still remember little bits from watching the show as a kid.
I had some old tapes (audio) of some of the ‘best’ episodes at one stage, having never watched it on TV and was in hysterics. I later watched it on Fox Classics. Brilliant show.
I was going to mention the oranges too!
There was supposed to be a UK version but I don’t think it ever eventuated. Stephanie somebody was doing the Rutth Crackness part.
What a classic that was I pi**ed myself laughing in the funeral episode when Maggie drops the oranges in Uncle Andrews’s grave classic stuff
