Pay TV extends vilification codes

ASTRA has amended its codes of practice to extend the grounds for vilification to include transgender and HIV/AIDS status.

aids_ribbonThe Australian Communications and Media Authority has announced that pay television group ASTRA has amended its codes of practice for open narrowcasting television services. It will extend the grounds for vilification to include transgender status and HIV/AIDS status.

The change follows comments received during public consultation.

Open narrowcasting television services are services whose reception is limited for one of a number of reasons, including that they are targeted to special interest groups or are intended only for limited locations.

ASTRA has also incorporated a new definition of ‘closed captioning’ which clarifies differences between analogue and digital reception equipment.
