Queen tribute not AGT’s champions

A Queen tribute band isn't happy about about being cut from Australia's Got Talent's semi finals, when it thought it had qualified.

jbluntA Queen tribute band are angry at being eliminated by Australia’s Got Talent after claiming they were told they qualified for the semi-finals.

Freddie Mercury lookalike Johnny Blunt says Killer Queen qualified for the semi-finals in an episode that aired on February 18.

But the band were later contacted by a producer who told them their services were no longer required.

“We were told on-camera that we had made it through, but later told that of the bands which make it to the finals, in reality only about half of them actually go through,” Blunt told the Courier Mail.

“So if they take 80, then only 40 actually perform at the next level.

A Seven spokesman said, “In the heats (or audition shows), the judges put through any acts that impress.

“The next stage of AGT involves the judges revisiting every act with an informed opinion, then making the decision on who goes through to the semi-finals. This process entails culling half of the acts.

“All acts are made aware of this elimination process, but it would seem Killer Queen have not understood.”

Most talent shows involve an elimination stage using judge’s discretion, be it So You Think You Can Dance Australia or as far back as Popstars. Perhaps the matter is one of clarity. Does AGT tell its contestants they have qualified for the next round, or qualified for consideration for the next round?

In a bit of self-promotion, the band has also posted a YouTube clip that protests the point a little harder.

  1. Well that clip alone shows that they weren’t one of the acts to be put through… I don’t see why they are crying fowl when the show itself shows them culling 80 down to 40 before the semis…

  2. They should be glad they got any publicity for their awful “band” at all. A Queen cover band should never be let loose into the world, particularly on a level like TV

  3. well good thing the judges kicked them off, we wouldn’t have seen their nasty side. but ignorance of the rules is never an excuse to lash out. there is a reason why the hundreds of other acts in the same position haven’t made a fuss

does anyone know if there is any $costs involved for the acts? if not, this situation is even worse. AGT gave them more free publicity than they would ever get on their own and this is how they repay them.

    idiots.

  4. i have no sympathy for these people, do they actually think that they are getting good publicity out of this? ignorant sore losers don’t get my vote.

their act wasn’t even that good there are so many more deserving acts in the comp this year.

i might just use that e-mail address to tell the judges they made a great choice getting rid of them.

Says it all. These are the rules and have been since the first series.
