Vale: Natasha Richardson

Actor Liam Neeson issues a statement asking for privacy following the death of actress Natasha Richardson, after a skiing lesson.

natasharichardsonLife support for actress Natasha Richardson has been turned off. The actress, 45, suffered a head injury in a skiing lesson in Montreal.

A statement issued by a publicist for Richardson’s husband, Liam Neeson, said, “Liam Neeson, his sons, and the entire family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Natasha. They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time.”

What was most shocking in this tragedy was the seemingly harmless nature of the accident.  Richardson had fallen during a beginner’s lesson. Resort spokeswoman Catherine Lacasse said that the actress was not wearing a ski helmet for her lesson.

“She was laughing and joking, and she walked to her room on her own,” Lacasse said. After complaining of a headache whe was taken to a hospital in Quebec.

Richardson’s family flew to her bedside after she was moved to Lenox Hill hospital in New York. Part of the Redgrave clan, she was the daughter of Vanessa Redgrave and sister of Joely Richardson (Nip / Tuck), married to actor Liam Neeson. Her maternal grandparents were the actors Michael Redgrave and Rachel Kempson, and her uncle Corin and aunt Lynn Redgrave are both actors. Her father, Tony Richardson, was a director, who died in 1991.

Much of Richardson’s career was in stage and film performances. She won a Tony in 1998 for her performance in Cabaret. Her film performances include roles in The Handmaid’s Tale and The Parent Trap.

Her television roles included Ellis Island, Ghosts, Hostages, Tales from the Crypt, and The Masters of Manhattan.

  1. What is so tragedy and cut life short. She was fine actress, bit of comedy in the movie of Maid in Manhattan and it was shame that she has gone forever. My condolence to his family, friends and relatives. RIP.

  2. Very sad this. She was on an episode of Top Chef: New York recently. Seemed a very nice person.
By the way, I’ve never seen anyone wearing a helmit when skiiing either.

  3. what a tragedy.
she was such a fine actress and people always said that her genuine bubbly personality shone through in her characters. i loved her in parent trap.

ps. johnson have you ever been skiing, no one wears helmets because they are a hazzard to others and any one is garunteed to fall multiple times when they are a beginner. this was a tragic accident nothing could have prevented it.

  4. Such a terrible shame. A damn fine actress, rich in talent and charisma. I can’t imagine what her family must be going through right now with such a sudden and sad loss. RIP.

  5. It is so sad, but the death might have been avoided if 1. she had worn a helmet when she skied and 2. if she was immediately treated after the accident.
