ABC takes Tara

Toni Collette's drama in which she plays a woman with multiple personalities will air on the ABC.

united-states-tara3The ABC has picked up the rights to United States of Tara, the Showtime drama starring Toni Colette as a woman with multiple personalities.

Collette is a wife and mother with dissociative identity disorder (DID) which emerges via several personalities: wild and flirty teenager T; old-fashioned housewife Alice; and male, loud, beer-drinking Vietnam vet Buck.

Created by Academy Award winner Diablo Cody (Juno) and produced by Steven Spielberg, there are twelve episodes in the first season.

It’s somewhat unusual that Showtime didn’t pick this one up, but it’s a win for Free to Air viewers.

No airdate has yet been announced.

  1. what channel is it going to be showing on? is it the abc that has like desperate housewives and grey’s anatomy or a different abc. Will it still be showing on showtime cause abc will have to edit it for public television hope it stays on showtime unedited

  2. Really clever move by ABC. Nice diversification out of costume dramas and English crime shows. This will build an audience most sought after by the commercials AB 18-49 hipsters. You’re my ABC that’s for sure. Who is ABC2’s programming director?
Definitely suits their ABC2 brand really well.

  3. It’s encouraging to see the ABC pick this up, following Carnivale and The West Wing. Not only does it mean quality American shows that would be treated badly by the commercial nets can get some real exposure here, but it also adds spice to Aunty’s almost entitrely British line up. Looking forward to it.

  4. I think Toni Collette is great in this (only seen first 3 episodes though…and am interested to see how the series develops). Good one ABC for picking it up!

  5. Tara was one of my favourite shows to watch this year. It is a very unusual choice for ABC though.
It would be a good one to air after Californication on Channel 10 or something similar.

  6. Bizarre. I’d imagine if any free to air would it’d be Nine at midnight.

After hearing all the terrible reviews following the season premiere I gave it a chance and after about 20 minutes stopped watching because it’s boring, silly and overacted.

…to be perfectly honest it’s just kinda stupid. Such a shame with all the great names involved in it.
