macgillSBS has announced its presentation team for the 2009 Ashes Series will include Stuart MacGill as host plus Greg Matthews and Damien Martyn.

MacGill, who also presents Uncorked on Lifestyle Food, returns to SBS after he formed part of the 2005 Ashes on-air team.

The three will provide analysis of the  Ashes Test Series and One Day Internationals to be played in the UK from July 2009.

The SBS broadcast will include morning updates, daily highlights and live coverage from 7:30pm (AEST) on SBS1 for each of the five Tests, available in HD.

“SBS was the only Australian free-to-air broadcaster who came to the table back in 2005 to ensure one of the greatest Ashes series ever was broadcast live and free-to-air to Australian audiences,” SBS Managing Director Shaun Brown said.

“Following on from this 2005 success and SBS’s strengthened partnership with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), we renewed our commitment to the UK Ashes tournament by securing the 2009 free-to-air rights. This means every ball, every run and every wicket will be shown live and free-to-air on SBS1.”

The 2009 Ashes Test Series commences on Wednesday 8 July.

  1. who really care about the hosts anyways?

    When the play stops its time to get up make some food and have that long awaited toilet break you’ve been putting off cos the action is too interesting. The only time i have ever been interested in the hosts was when Kerry o’keefe was on channel 7 for the 2005 ODI series!

  2. Nine have slutted all of their sport except Rugby League off to Foxtel. James Packer cares only for casinos, not television. only a matter of time before the station dies. Kerry must be rolling in his grave.

  3. Personally, I think it is a mistake not having an established host (i.e like Simon Hill in 2005). I say this because without such a host the telecast might appear dull and stale. MacGill I think is not accomplished enough to remedy this.

  5. Great to hear this.I am so glad that SBS has picked it up again. They did a great job last time. Its nice to be able to watch the cricket without being toldt o buy some crap or hear Tony Grieg crap on.

    Only pity is losing the Tour de France.

I assume SBS will broadcast Australia’s one-day clash against Scotland and the two Twenty20 internationals between England and Australia (all of which are held between the Ashes tests and the seven-game ODI series) as well. And what about SBS’s coverage of the World Athletics Championships in Berlin from August 27 to September 4?

  7. TDF highlights will make it on SBSHD but anyway, most of the footage is not HD to start with so no real loss there

    Lets hope the SBS2 EPG is up and running so at least you can record one and watch the other til dawn and then after work – three weeks of awesomeness for us dumbo sport lovers

  10. This is exciting, and, as far as I can see, the first time SBS will show a programme in HD. And being 720p, it may have fewer artifacts than on the 1080i channels.

    Is the Tour de France even available from the broadcaster in HD?
