Celebrities in digital retail push

Sandra Sully, Larry & Kylie, B1 & B2. They were all there to help Freeview sell some boxes.

freeview-launch_7TV celebrities were hauled in for the Freeview media press conference in Sydney yesterday.

TEN News presenter Sandra Sully, SBS commentator Craig Foster and Seven Morning Show hosts Larry Emdur and Kylie Gillies and some Bananas resplendent in Pyjama were on hand as Freeview chairman Kim Dalton unveiled the first range of Freeview-compatible equipment at Dick Smith’s George St store.

While not all manufacturers were present, Freeview says the following are participating:

Arista Electronics Pty Ltd
Digital Products Group (Beyonwiz)
Hills Industries Ltd (DGTEC)
Hybrid Television Services (ANZ) Pty Ltd
Kogan Technologies
LG Electronics Australia Pty Ltd
Panasonic Australia Pty Ltd
Pixel Magic Systems Ltd
Sharp Corporation
Sony Australia Pty Ltd
Strong Technologies Pty Ltd

“Any HD digital receiver will receive the Freeview channels,” said CEO Robin Parkes. “These product logos are designed to further assist people in identifying digital TV equipment. Because Freeview channels are all digital, they provide a superior viewing experience with fantastic picture quality and sound.”

Nobody is really saying whether B1 and B2 were able to explain when ONE  HD will be coming to Wagga Wagga, or whether Sandra Sully broke into a rendition of ‘Born Free’  but there’s always hope…

  1. Such bad marketing, isn’t it? The message is still not clear. Is it a set top box? is it a product? is it a service? is it a …, um… what is it really? Will my samsung 48inch 1080p get freeview? Will I need to upgrade? I think I’ll just stick to what i’ve got.

At least the Gov’s ‘Get Ready’ commercial about the digital transition makes sense!

  2. Freeview is only going to confuse thigs now the government has started it’s own digital TV advertising, along with it’s own labels for TV and DVRs.

I want to know if any manufactures are taking this seriously anymore?

BTW Where was Humphrey B. Bear, maybe he would have a better job explaining things?

  3. Come on Dan Ilic… Bananas don’t sell television (besides “B1 do you know what I’m thinking, it’s Freeview time!” sounds silly.) They only go well in a viral video on the net with… Peanut Butter Jelly Time!

The Aussie consumer: We want the truth!

Freeview: You can’t handle the truth!

The downloader: We know the truth!

  4. “Any HD digital receiver will receive the Freeview channels,” said CEO Robin Parkes. “These product logos are designed to further assist people in identifying digital TV equipment. Which is exactly the same as any HD TV without Freeview.
