Gordon Ramsay fails to sizzle

Australian viewers are over Gordon Ramsay. And they have been for a while.

hellskitchenMedia commentators were all saying it ahead of his screening.

Last night, Hell’s Kitchen failed to set Nine’s oven on fire.

Only 625,000 viewers tuned in for the reality cooking show, thumped by TEN’s repeat of NCIS on 1.38m viewers.

Seven aired different movies in different cities which totalled 585,000 viewers.

TEN stormed home with a huge share of 31.3% over Seven’s 24.55 and Nine’s 24.1%.

Unless he can film a locally-produced series it seems viewers are well and truly over the swearing chef.

Agree with everything you said here, the UK version of Kitchen Nightmares(along with the F Word) are his two best shows, but I prefer his US KN program to Hell’s Kitchen.

  2. It’s the swapping, changing and cutting that the 9 network did last year which was the last straw for me to watch the networks ramsey shows.

I’ll admit that I like ramsey, and hells kitchen for that matter, but after all the cutting/ moving/ whatever else they did to ramsey’s shows last year I had enough. I wasn’t expecting them to show S2, so bought the DVD’s to watch at my own pleasure, not at 9:30 one night, then not at all the next 2 weeks, then at 11:30 the week after and so on.

9 seriously need to pick up their game, get out of bed with Foxtel and stop selling their viewers short.

  3. I don’t like the stuff Ramsay makes for US audiences. However if they were to show UK Kitchen Nightmares and The F Word I would certainly be watching. These are quality programmes. I hate all the US voiceovers on his US Shows (“You won’t beleive what happens next….” etc.)

  4. Top Chef on Arena is even better if you are into cooking.

Most people don’t download, or even know how to. That definitely is not an issue with ratings. If there were ratings for downloaded shows, I’d suggest they’d be lucky to be much over 10,000 – that’s lower than the sample error rate (as far as I am aware, but could be wrong) of the current ratings system.

  5. I didnt even know it was on because I no longer bother to read the FTA tv guides. They are not worth the paper they are printed on. I’ve already seen HK on Foxtel and the contestants are so thick and useless they really do not deserve to win a restaurant.

  6. David, i agree. It wasn’t downloading so much as it was Nine’s stupid overkill programming that put the nails in with the coffin to Gordon Ramsey prematurely.

  7. Ramsay Series 1 – 4 is available on DVD at JB Hifi, so why would anyone bother, and also given that Lifestyle and LS Food have shown the series all previously before, its a wonder it manages to even get the figures on 9 that it does. Lifestyle Food basically repeated Series 1 and 2 so many times in 2007 that it was everywhere!

  8. David, what reason does Seven have for airing different movies in different cities? I don’t get why they’d do that?!

And the Ramsay thing… Well it’s about f*cking time!

  9. you know what the biggest trouble is for networks these days? We are all super techno now and can get our shows whenever we like gone are the days a network can actually rule the viewer. Tv has changed now but unfortunately the networks are still runing and treating us like its 1970.

They need to start giving the viewer current up to date programs without axing after a week or i can seriously see the medium of internet totally taking over and networks dying. its going to be made for internet viewers and even that will change in regards to how we obtain the right to download. i think that television is in a very delicate state at the moment.

    1. There is still a big audience that doesn’t do any downloading. Look how many tuned in for a repeat of NCIS last night. I realise downloading is a big issue to an internet audience and it is working its way through the wider public, but I don’t think that’s what killed Ramsay.

  10. I like GR, but showing a season that is 3 years old is just poor form, especially with other methods of obtaining the latest episodes these days. Nine need to learn to fast track reality shows from the us if they are ever going to rate, they shouldn’t be showing seasons from way back.

Nine really only have themselves to blame though. They had a gold mine last year in Gordon Ramsay, but overkilled it. The fascination could of lasted for years if nine had played it correctly.

Also Im sure if Nine had fast tracked season 5 of Hell’s or Survivor Tocantins in a prime time spot, they would be getting 1mil+. No wonder they aren’t winning the ratings these days really.

  11. as much as I love gordon ramsay.. hells kitchen im just not into.. they are better off airing the F Word.. I prefer seeing Ramsay at his best.. giving proper advice on a subject he knows.. not watching silly people bitch and moan about how they want to be chefs but dont want to do the hard work.

  12. to Jules, in answer to “Well, seriously, what do 9 expect?”

they expect us to listen to their promos and believe wholeheartedly.
Dont forget Homemade will be an television event (biggest ever I think was their claim) – last used by one of their other renovation shows.
Unfortunately for Nine, people do not believe them anymore,
    Can’t blame then either !!

  13. Kitchen Nightmares is much better, but the mass appeal of Ramsay is gone, so its best left for the Lifestyle food channel or later at night – better Ramsey than crap like Bridezillas though.

  14. Well, seriously, what do 9 expect? They’ve advertised this as the ‘new series’ which is taking deception to a new level. It’s not the new series, it’s three years old, and people haven’t been fooled. Reap what you sow 9.

  15. I actually tuned in for the first half an hour and it affirmed just how much I don’t like Gordon Ramsay. By the look of those numbers it seems Australia agrees. 10:05 did not come quick enough – I switched to Book Club on ABC1.

  16. I actually didn’t even know it was on, or I would have watched it.

Ah well. That’s what you get, Nine, for forcing IceTV to put “N/A Channel Nine” in place of listings they can’t yet “predict”.

  17. why would nine take of a show that isn’t rating and then return it a few month latter, obviously your going to have the same result as the first time.

  18. I think 9 should keep ramsey on nxt week and then move him to 10 30 the following week, becasue the majority of people watching will prob stick with it. 9 need to revisit thier tuesdays. i reckon mabey 2.5 men at 7 30, commercail breakdown at 8 and then 2 new shows at 8 30 and 9 30.
