Hugh Sheridan for Play School

Actor Hugh Sheridan flexxes his muscles again, to be a co-presenter on the ABC's iconic children's series.

hughsAfter news that he will present a show at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, now actor Hugh Sheridan will join the ABC’s Play School.

Talk about versatile.

The Packed to the Rafters star will present alongside former All Saints actress Jolene Anderson in between his commitments to Seven.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity, and I’m grateful to Rafters for opening up new doors. I can’t wait,” Sheridan told the Sunday Telegraph.

“I love the show. John (Hamblin), Noni (Hazlehurst) and Benita (Collings) – they were my favourites as a kid.”

There have been plenty of presenters on the ABC show who have been TV favourites: Georgie Parker, Andrew McFarlane, Justine Clarke, Brooke Satchwell, Simon Burke, Jay Laga’aia, Alex Papps, Lorraine Bayly, Colin Friels, John Waters, Deborah Mailman, Tom Oliver and even Ruth Cracknell, Patsy King, Anne Haddy and Monica Trapaga.

If Sheridan, who is nominated for Most Popular Talent (Male) at the Logies isn’t already popular with young mums, he soon will be.

  1. Actually, Play School is very highly regarded in the industry. It’s not edited, it’s all in one take, so you have it or you don’t. Some of the true greats like Lorraine Bayley and Philip Quast have graced the Play School stage. It’s a privellege to be there.

  2. Vman: I’m not privy to the production of Play School, but I’m led to believe it is regarding as a great TV acting job because everything apparently is all done in one take. No room for bloopers or stuff-ups, what is taped is what goes to air. There are no luxuries like re-takes. And it’s not just a matter of getting kids to “watch” (because kids will watch a test pattern!), it’s getting them (and sometimes their parents too) to “engage”. To really feel like the presenter is talking ‘just’ to them. That’s not as easy.

  3. Lurker> I still find it strange though. I mean children’s television is classified as worthless by the Australian entertainment industry (look at the logies) but I think maybe it’s because TV veterans have been on before that he feels so privileged.

I don’t think it’s because children are a ‘hard audience’. Children will watch paint dry if it’s colorful. I don’t think it’s got anything to do with kids. I think it’s just because of the veterans before him who’ve starred on it.

  4. Vman; actors regard Play School as a top job because children are a hard audience… It is a major door opening – it’s rare that someone so young would get onto Play School.

  5. Go Hugh ! You were a standout from Ep 1 of the Rafters and I read that you can sing and dance too. Do the right thing, work hard and you will be our next superstar.
