Radio jibe over Underbelly cameo

Kyle Sandilands reckons Merrick Watts did Underbelly for publicity, which contradicts the modest impression Watts gave to TV Tonight 2 weeks ago.

wattsThis is such a non-story it’s almost not worth visiting. But in the interests of helping to set the record straight….

Austereo’s Kyle Sandilands has criticised the fleeting Underbelly appearance by his radio rival Merrick Watts.

Yesterday Sandilands suggested Watts only took part in Monday’s episode for publicity.

“(I wouldn’t want) to have a Merrick Watts part where you get shot in the head two minutes into it,” he said.

“I’d want to be a full deal star, a real star.

“Not a bit part that you buy your way into.”

Production company Screentime denied that Watts “absolutely did not” pay for the part. “We offered Merrick the role,” a spokesman said.

Two weeks ago TV Tonight spoke to Merrick and Rosso for their self-titled Comedy Channel series during which Watts downplayed his appearance on the Nine series, prior to its airing.

“I play a very, very small cameo that goes for about 11 seconds,” he says. “I’m very concerned people are going to think it’s bigger than what it is. It’s not like what Kate (Ritchie) had. Kate had a role in Underbelly. I’m literally on for a few seconds playing a guy by the name of Marty Johnson, who was a Kiwi drug dealer. But I don’t even do a Kiwi accent.”

He also said Working Dog was “kind, very kind” for offering him an acting role on The Hollowmen.

Wryly, yesterday he added in a statement: “I also bought my way into The Hollowmen, Thank God You’re Here and even The Merrick & Rosso Show – which is why I can’t afford a Rolls-Royce Phantom.”

  1. Sandilands’ lead in the Sydney FM breakfast shift is being steadily clawed away by the Merrick/Rosso/Kate Ritchie show, which might explain why he feels so threatened by Merrick.
