Solid debut or No Deal?

Cast your eye over the headlines used this week to summarise the battle of the game shows.

edhotseatIt’s been a funny old week of assessing the Hot Seat v Deal or No Deal battle.

Media have been falling over themselves trying to summarise the stoush.

Just take a look at these headlines that have been used:

Eddie McGuire fails to topple ratings winner Deal or No Deal
Andrew O’Keefe wins head to head with Eddie McGuire
Hot Seat makes solid debut
Eddie McGuire’s Millionaire Hot Seat beaten by MASH
Eddie McGuire’s Millionnaire Hot Seat well behind Deal Or No Deal
Underbelly, Eddie McGuire’s Millionaire Hot Seat cop ratings blow
Eddie and Andrew are game on
A tough deal for Eddie MvGuire as Andrew O’Keefe holds all the aces
Andrew O’Keefe puts Eddie McGuire in the hot seat
Hot Seat fails to cut Deal
Eddie’s Hot Seat gets Mashed
McGuire back in hot seat
Can Eddie unseat Deal or No Deal?
Nine’s ratings blow
TEN News at Five dominates its timeslot

The short answer is Deal won the game show battle, Nine lifted its 5:30 share and TEN reckons its winning with the News.

You can make up your own mind at the figures at Week 17

More importantly now the first week of the revamped Millionaire is over, what did you actually think of it?

  1. 9 news is bad compared to 7. Even if Underbelly was on before 9 news the news wouldn’t rate well. They need to fix the news. Each show rates primarily on its own merit, not because people are too lazy to switch channels in between. A good 5.30 show won’t help 9 news.

  2. Firstly O’ Keafe is just more popular. More of an all-round entertainer.
Its a shame because Deal or No Deal is a satanic gameshow for idiots. On paper it seams like a mistake but in reality people love it. The traditional game show with actual questions to test knolledge may be dead. I wish Einstyne Factor was on every day….

  3. Yeah just saw it was written by AAP, but it was used on ninemsn which is where i saw it. Still, trust Ninemsn to go with a positive spin like that. While Hot Seat is crap nonetheless, its prob more to do with the 6pm news than the lead in thats the problem.

  4. I thought the show was a refreshing change to the 5.30 slot. I’ve enjoyed watching it, even though I’m not an Eddie fan.

The faster pace of the show makes it work much better than the original version.

I’m hoping people give it a shot and its a permanent fixture.

  5. eddie – enough said

was useless when he was eddie everywhere, is useless when he is eddie pop up somewhere, is better off being eddie nowhere – when will ch9 learn

  6. I agree the format needs a bit of tweaking. The whole “the prize goes down if you get a question wrong” needs to be rectified. But overall I find it more entertaining than Deal, which I got over years ago. I mean, all it is is is basically saying “yes” or “no”, something which even a toddler can do. How is that entertaining? At least with Millionaire you can scream at the contestant on TV for not knowing the answer!
In terms of ratings it is a slight improvment on Antiques, but probably not enough to produce more eps. However, Deal is now in “Double Shot” guise now so maybe if it went back to normal Deal, Millionaire might increase. Or it might not.

  7. The “Hot Seat makes solid debut” headline was on the ninemsn website, surprise surprise. I saw that headline and thought, what ratings are you looking at. Hot Seat is a dud.

  8. I was ready to dislike Hot Seat but gave it a shot and it’s actually not bad at all. Well done 9. Kinda over Deal – they need to revamp it up a bit.

  9. I Think if nothing changes within four weeks, then we can call this one expensive flop….for now, I’ll hold judgement on whether any actual impact can be made in terms of providing a solid lead-in
Looking at city-by-city numbers, Melbourne is the only city in which Hot Seat is doing somewhat well. Yet Nine News within Melbourne has made almost no real improvement.

Nine need to realise that it isnt the lead-in that counts, but the quality of their news service.

  10. it is quite dry, started out mildly entertaining but wouldn’t go out of my way to watch it and deal is the better option for entertainment. it needs to be tweaked a lot but i’d assume that all the eps have been filmed and will almost cirtainly not be renued so it’s too late for changes.

for the people comaring it to antiqes. if we look back to feburary where airline/bargain hunt were played at 5:00 you can comapre them properly. antiques was getting in the high 500’s (and that was summer where there were less afternoon viewers) which is just about what millionaire is getting. so no, millionaire has not improved the 5:30 timeslot the only thing that has changes is the big pricetag.

expensive flops are becoming 9’s trademark.

  11. Hot Seat isn’t rating any better than Million Dollar Wheel Of Fortune did.

Wonder if they’ll grant Eddie more than the 5 weeks Wheel was given to build an audience….

  12. Millionaire Hotseat is by far the more entertaining and mentally stimulating show, albeit very cut-throat with a lot of luck involved in getting to be the contestant that ultimately sits in the Hotseat at Q15. It is just so breakneck that poor Eddie sometimes slips up with the passing rules, and confuses the hell out of the contestants. Great money can be won on Hotseat, but is ultimately contingent on the contestant answering question 15 to get it correct. The producers’ dilemma is to make the question easy enough to answer to win some money, but not so easy that most people could answer it…that is, you want to give it some degree of difficulty. I think they aired a fair mix of episodes this week, with 3 winning a sum great than or equal to 10K, and 2 winning 1K (by not getting Q15 right).

I was one of the poor souls this week who got knocked out by being passed a dodgy question most people wouldn’t have known the answer to, whilst knowing the answers to about 90% of the remaining questions, but I still found the experience to be wonderful – even if they did cut half my segment for time. I’d thoroughly recommend anyone wanting to audition for Millionaire if the show continues, to give it a shot – it’s heaps of fun, and the staff treat you like royalty.

I do think a 7pm slot would be much better to counter the problem of people being a bit distracted at 5.30 cooking dinner etc, and to catch the people who are normally driving home or stuck on a train at 5.30. Good luck to Millionaire – it deserves to succeed with some minor tweaks to the format.

  13. @Benno – it’s due for a 4:30 start, not 5:30.

The real test is whether or not the ratings increase over Antiques has made a difference to the 6PM News figures…

  14. I think Nine is on too something. As long as they give it a chance. I think we may see some interesting results in the near future. All the best to Eddie and the Crew at Nine.

  15. Hmm.. “ratings winner Deal or No Deal” isn’t very accurate, seeing as TEN News at Five is far ahead of all other shows between 5 and 6PM..
Deal is hardly a a ratings winner, coming second in its slot all the time.

I’ve watched a few Hot Seat eps now on and off and apart from having the satisfaction of screaming the right answers at the TV, it doesn’t provide much entertainment.

  16. @jim you’re comparing it to the antiques reapeat hour. for all we know millionaire is a decline from antiques.

i loved millionaire, but cannot warm to this. 5:30 is wrong for it. you really need to sit down with coffee and concentrate to enjoy it. at 5:30 the family is running around catching up on each others day, preparing dinner and watching TV half attentively which is qhy deal is perfect for the slot.

i always knew that this would follow in million dollar wheels footsteps but i didn’t think it would do way worse than it.

  17. its doing at least 100K better than Antiques so it can’t be seen as a failure. Its improved the slot. id say its still too early to tell its long term future. Once everyone actually knows it exists and has made up which game format they prefer, well be able to see whether it might gradually go up in numbers.

  18. i watched the whole first week of millionaire. i thought it was ok at the start but am already getting sick of it. there are flaws in the format and i think they should adjust it so that more money is won. deal hands out $30k+ on a daily basis but on millionaire, with those rules, it will be rare that someone goes home with more than $1000 which costs the show in purpose.

ratings wise. i don’t think anyone expected it to beat deal. but it has done pretty bad. if we had 5:30-6:00 figures for the antiques repeats i’m sure we will find that the news lead in has barely changed.

it has just been another one of 9’s expensive flops.
