Tobin to choose Nine?

A report today suggests James Tobin is considering defecting from Seven to Nine to front an afternoon TV show.

jtobThere is a report today that without a long-term contract to tie him to Sunrise, James Tobin is considering defecting to Channel 9 to front an afternoon TV show.

Last week Tobin filmed a pilot of a revamped Let’s Make a Deal at GTV9 studios in Melbourne for FremantleMedia.

A second pilot was later filmed with Eddie McGuire as host.

TV Tonight understands the Tobin-pilot is intended for the European market, as a way for FremantleMedia to shop the format around to local markets.

The McGuire-hosted edition is the one being considered by Nine. According to those in attendance, McGuire glided through the gig, without missing a beat.

Reports that Rob Mills also filmed a pilot are off the mark.

James Tobin has previously hosted afternoon shows for Seven, fronting Go Go Stop and The Big Arvo.

  1. Go go stop is a racist television show. A good example is today’s (3rd of july) ridiculous, embarrassing win. The little asian girl was right at the front, the only reason why that little boy won is because the arrows carried him about 4 to 5 steps forward. The girl actually got there with general knowledge intelligence.
    Racist, embarrassing, lame show.

  2. He’s not that great a host, but he’s pretty good.

    I guess if he goes to Nine, both of Eclipse Music TV’s last year’s host are now on Nine. Last year the show was hosted by him and Lizzy Lovette. Now Lizzy is on The Music Jungle on Nine.

    I think Rob Mills would have been a good host for a game show as he was great on The Mint mansion. If Eddie gets it, does that mean he’ll be on Millionaire, Let’s Make A Deal and that new “magazine-style” show? Or has that mag show been axed before it even started?

  5. James is his real name. Jesse was just a nick name that his friends use to call him, so he just went with it. Then when he went to sunrise he decided to go with proper name.

  6. Gogo Stop is an absolute embarrassment. IMO there hasn’t been a decent kids game show since the likes of Double Dare and Amazing – James Sherry, now there was a kids host!

  7. jerome, i know what you mean the other day i saw an episode of gogostop when he had long hair (so it must have been an old repeat) and he said “i am jesse tobin, see you next time” but now his name is james.

    weird.

    i think game shows need a break for a while, how many expensive flops do we need for them to get the message that people don’t want them.

  8. lol at sunrise being nominated as a light entertainment program, although seven would call it a news/current affair show being nominated in the same category as rove and deal prove that the rest of us don’t think so.

  10. I like James, but his cross to Mel and Kochie on Sunrise on Monday was excruciating – he talked up Sunrise being nominated for the “Most Popular Light Entertainment Program”.

    Mel and Kochie – clearly mortifed as they thought they hosted a news program shot the guy dagger eyes!

  11. Game shows can work if they are easy for the audience to follow and participate in. Recent attempts have been complicated to follow, too stupid, or just had a very poor choice of host. Shows like Taken out, hole in the wall should not even be considered part of the game show genre!

  12. I think it’d be wise for one of the commercial networks to pick up an afternoon cartoon program.

    Remember the kids WB! afternoons or whatever it was called. That show was fantastic. The Adventures of Batman for half an hour, Animaniacs or something of the kind for the other half. It was my favourite thing to watch when I’d get home from school.

    He would make a good host for this kind of show.

  13. European market?? Why would you put a different host in for that?? Surely they’d just show the Eddie version to sell the show overseas.

    They wouldn’t care who hosts it – it would just be about the format.

    Sound like spin to me.

  15. despite what anyone says. gameshows are not working atm. the con-test, power of 10, 1vs100, family feud, million dollar wheel, the rich list, temptaion, are you smarter than a 5th grader, taken out, hole in the wall. none of these can be considered a sucess in the past few years. of course DOND is the exception but the odds are still bad. they need to be given a rest. IMO this 7:00 version of millionaire and lets make a deal have failure written all over them.

    btw, does anyone know why he changed his name from jesse tobin to james tobin. did he think we wouldn’t realise.

  16. He would nuts to leave seven for a game show. Very few survive and he would be smart to stay put. I think it is a ploy to get a contract too…….
