easybeatsYou only have to hear the opening bars of Friday on My Mind to become hooked. It remains an iconic 1960s Australian rock song. APRA has even declared it the most influential Australian song of the past 75 years.

This documentary charts The Easybeats’ history within the context of Australia emerging from its cultural cringe in the early 1960s.

The band came together at the Villawood Migrant Hostel in 1964. Within a year they topped the pop charts in Australia.

All five founding members were from families who had migrated to Australia from Europe: lead singer Stevie Wright and drummer Gordon “Snowy” Henry Fleet were from England; rhythm guitarist George Young was from Scotland; and lead guitarist Harry Vanda and bassist Dick Diamonde were from The Netherlands.

By 1969 it was over for the band, however, there were solo careers to come in performing, writing and producing.

Friday on My Mind airs at 7:30 Friday night on SBS.

Would that be SBS or pay-TV? Doesn’t sound the kind of thing you would see on Nine.
