homeMADE in trouble

homeMADE tumbles to just 889,000 in only its second showing giving Nine real headaches for a key mid-year show.

homemade21Nine’s homeMADE is proving an early disaster for Channel Nine, attracting just 889,000 in only its second outing. It is a drop from its premiere of 1.02m viewers.

Considering all the promotion Nine ran on the show, the production expense and the importance of the show as a key mid-year brand, Nine has big problems on its hands.

The show was whipped by TEN’s Talkin’ ‘Bout My Generation at just under 1.6m viewers -almost matching its first week. Together with MasterChef Australia, TEN has some popular new shows on its hands.

Seven won the night with 28.4%  but TEN was a strong second with 27.6%, leaving Nine some distance behind on 22.5%.

So far this week TEN is also leading Nine.

  1. I think the problem with homeMADE is with the designers (and therefore the overall concept of the show).
Who cares if they get voted off or not….they’ve still got a job to go to at the end of the day.
The success of The Block and (to a lesser extent) Changing Rooms was that they were built around the relationships of real people that you could relate to.

  2. Thats what you get when you type into a computer the base insticts of what we are suposed to like into a computer, press the “Turn into lifestyle show” button and follow the dot point instructions down to the skin tan.

  3. I also think the split format wrecks it. I’m a sucker for reality tv and maybe if I got my result in one, one hour show I’d watch. But i watched Sunday night’s premiere, discovered at the end we’d find nothing out until Tuesday and off I went. I didn’t watch Tuesday because by then I didn’t really care.

I also didn’t go for making some people finish early for a ‘climax’ when there’s no particular reason for them to finish early other than to see the ‘mentor’ they can keep working on it later, and they aren’t actually judged then.

If I were to watch it, I’d only watch Tuesday. With all the recaps and carry on Sunday’s show becomes irrelevant.

  4. I don’t think it’s that bad actually. I enjoyed The Block more but for what it is it’s not bad. But the host needs to go. Did Nine hear him talk before hiring him? His voice is terrible! And obviously these sort of ratings are very problematic for Nine.

  5. There are a few reasons for this failure. One is that this kind of show is old now. The Block, Changing Rooms, these shows were popular 5-10 years ago.

Secondly, Nine effectively killed it off with all those ridiculous ‘Sneak Peeks’.

Third, it’s up against much better alternatives.

All in all, I’m glad to see Nine getting wallopped.

It will surely be replaced with either 20 to 1 or Two and a Half men?

  6. nine have shown so many promos that people where sick of it even before the series began, all ads do is get people to watch the first episode, it’s quality that gets people to keep watching. and what was with millionaire having the contestants from homemade yesterday it was such a pathetic cross promotion i couldn’t even watch.

  7. My Mum’s an avid home renovator, always after the latest styles and crazes, but as she said to me last night: “They chop and change between the different teams way too quickly. You don’t get to see what they’ve done, you don’t get to see ideas, you just see quick-fire editing and the end result, or tension from a lack of result. Whoop-di-doo.”

Nine needs a clean slate, and they could start by getting out of the “home renovation, countdown and 2-and-a-half men” craze they’ve been in for way too long, and maybe start looking outside the box. They keep going back to what used to work – Tara on the hero show, and Peter Overton on Missing Pieces is talentless overkill. Keep them on 60 minutes where they belong, and brighten up our lives with something fresh and new! By the way, a new station ident or “up next” promo won’t cut it, more needs to be done, and soon.

I tend to think it would also benefit them to work closer with their regional counterparts – WIN’s image is appalling, their on-air presentation lacks, and they’re still using station idents from the 9-in-the-box days that noone liked. Surely this isn’t helping the main station’s viewership?

  8. I decided to watch last nights episode on time slip to fast forward through the product placement and boring bits. It reminded me of a lesser version on Anne Maurice’s Interior Rivalry on HowTo Channel.
I dont know how anyone could take the judge with the cardigan and 80’s style large wire glasses serioulsy. The host is sooooo useless and annoying, he is such a nobody, that everytime they cut to him they put up his name again and underneath it says “Design Guru”!!! LOL! Guru?? Who say’s that???
I see this going to a different time and being replaced with Nines usual fillers, 2&1/2 Men or 20-1.

  9. Problem with the show is that they don’t show any of the thinking-planning by the designers. The show would have more interest if they showed the designers asking what the owners want and talking through the pros and cons of different ideas. And as Craig wrote, it needs to be practical.

And playing the time pressure game … why would you want to watch someone stuff up someone’s home simply because they didn’t have time.

  10. predicted this from the very beginning.

as for the reasoning, sure the GFC had something to do with it. i think it is mainly because people are sick of these reno shows and have been for a while, every new one is less sucessful than the last and this is what it has come to.

has the whole season been filmed ie. has the money been spent? if it has, 9 is has a big problem. so much money down the toilet. they can’t keep it on much longer it’s harming the whole sunday and tuesday lineup and looks like it will only get worse.

  11. lol! maybe this show would be better in a later timeslot, without much competition. Sunday 6.30 is very competitive, and tuesday 7.30 has already established hit shows. Maybe this would be better suited to 9.30?

  12. I’m honestly surprised that Nine’s bogan watchers are not lapping up this show…why do they devour Domestic Blitz and 20 to 1 but not this one?? Something’s off here. Might have something to do with that creepy David host guy, he’s a bit of a weirdo

  13. I only saw about 20 minutes of it on Sunday night (or whenever the first episode aired) but what I saw was truly dull television. Someone needs to tell nine that you can’t manufacture drama out of just anything. I’d rather watch World’s Deadliest Catch.

  14. I agree with Herman, who wants to watch a show that spends such large sums of money (whether in contra, advertising or cost) when a lot of people are struggling? It may be time for 9 to give this format a rest, think of something new.

  15. As others have said Nine misjudged the whole housing thing, people struggling with home loads don’t want to watch shows where they spend $1000s on home renovations. Now if it was a show about practical things people can do to improve their homes without spending lots of money.
