Idol to open Sundays with elimination

Idol singers will be eliminated at the top of the revamped Sunday shows.

idol-agWith the elimination of Australian Idol‘s Monday night episodes in its upcoming season, all eyes are on how it will structure its revamped Sunday editions.

TV Tonight understands Sunday episodes will open with the elimination of a singer from the preceding week.

That also makes it a tough show for younger contestants to then turn around and perform -some of the younger ones have been visibly upset as close friends are cut.

At this stage the new voting format it still being finalised but with most voting for the show happening immediately after the episode, producers may not necessarily keep voting lines open all week.

Auditions for the upcoming season now move to Sydney where Delta Goodrem will participate as a guest judge. Her fiance Brian McFadden recently joined the Melbourne judging panel.

Ricki-Lee is also on the audition tour, affirming her continuation with the Idol brand.

Given the move by TEN for a tighter, stand-alone show, it now raises the question: will So You Think You Can Dance dump Mondays next year?

  1. This is interesting. You’re completely right in that it’s going to make it harder for the contestants to perform, though I guess you could argue that performing when they’re upset/emotional is part of the music business at some point or other. Monday night shows did use to work once upon a time (the first three or so seasons) even without guests brought in. I think the question will really be if this is Idol’s last year. All of those celebs on the audition trail seems a bit gimmicky.

  2. When a show has run it’s course you get rid of it.. not try desperatly to save it.. Look at what happened in the Final Year of Big Brother!

  3. interesting, so the person that is eliminated spends a whole week rehersing their performance for nothing.

@Johnson, there is no reason that the voting lines can’t be open for the whole week.

  4. Dance eliminations should be half an hour, if anything on Mondays.

Good move by Idol – raise the age up to 18. Seriously, the pressure and affects Idol has after the comp. are too much for 16 year olds to handle. Great to see Delta judging as well.

  5. So does this mean contestants will learn a song and may or may not get to perform it if they get eliminated. That seems a bit of a waste to me. It would be better to close with an elimination rather than waste somone’s time.

Have to say American Idol this year is amazing. The talent pool in the US is incredible!!!!

  6. That kinda sucks, as it would mean the show starts on such a downer. The losing contestant would have rehearsed his/her song all week, just to be told they are going. Wouldn’t it be better at the end ala Dancing with the Stars?

  7. The problem with the eliminations being at the start of the show is that someone will work all week on their song, and then get eliminated before they can even sing it, unless they get to sing it as their ‘farewell’ song before the remaining contestants sing theirs. If not, then I think it should be elimination last, like DWTS.

  8. i dont think SYTCD will lose mondays… their monday show if set up will judges voting a dancer off for the first 4 weeks of competition so it wouldnt work.. would make sunday night go for 3 hrs!

  9. i don’t think they should make so you think you can dance not have a monday show, just because sometimes they have pretty good guests, and the group routine and the solos..

  10. It would make sense for Ten to keep the voting lines open all week so the diehards can empty their wallets.
I think it’s ridiculous eliminating at the start of the show, it just seems wrong.
No way could Dance dump it’s Monday shows, the group dances are too good!

  11. This could mean voting lines will only open for two days after the show, similar to Australia’s Got Talent (which like Idol is produced by Fremantle Media).
