Jim Waley join Sky News

And nobody anywhere is particularly surprised....

waley1Veteran news presenter Jim Waley will present a new bulletin called Sky National News with Jim Waley from 6pm on June 29 2009 on Sky News.

The announcement follows the sudden exit of John Gatfield last week.

“Jim is one of Australia’s most credible and respected newsmen. His experience, both reporting and presenting, television news in this country is unrivalled and I am very proud to welcome him to the Sky News team”, Sky News CEO Angelos Frangopoulos said.

“For almost 40 years viewers tuned to Jim for news regarding politics, world affairs, the economy and arts and entertainment. He has covered the globe bringing Australians the stories that matter and we are thrilled to have him back on the air.”

Last week Frangopoulos carefully told The Australian “no announcements” had been made regarding the hiring of Waley, while Waley said, “If the right opportunity presents itself I would consider it.”

With the appointment now official, Waley has said, “I relish the opportunity to work on agenda-setting news of national interest in prime time, and give viewers a real choice. My brief is to present engaging and informative bulletins of quality and relevance.

“What more can an old journo ask for?”

Current Sky prsenter Michael Willesee is expected to host Friday – Sundays.

  1. Wait. They sign a news reader and that means “they’re trying to establish some semblance of credibility and sophistication”

    Sky News stands for nothing.

  2. You have to give them some credit. They’re trying to establish some semblance of credibility and sophistication. Something that is seriously lacking in Australian news at the moment.

Seven News is just tabloid gossip.
Nine News is a poor imitation of Seven News.
Ten News is so strapped for cash its become a power-point presentation.
ABC News is very good power-point presentation and could leave the competition for dead with a little bit more money.
    SBS wins.

  3. Most news on sky is very sydney centric. They cant compete with state based news thats on FTA channels. If they trying to compete with 7 & 9 News at 6 then what about all the time differences. Its a bit short sighted to employ a man that is almost retirement age. Could they not have dumped John Gatfield for a younger newsreader.

  4. hehe.. doesn’t the title just sound so american.. It sounds like that one with Jim Lehrer or whatever his name is.. ah well, sky news isn’t too bad, they’re able to cover a lot more than the commercial networks.. but i tend to think most people don’t tend to think “ooh it’s 6:00 better switch on sky”.. most people just watch it on a more casual basis… but i dunno.. it’ll probably work well for them

  5. sky have tried michael w on prime time before and it hasn’t worked so i dont know why they are giving him the slot…mangos would be much better.

i can’t see how sky national news is going to be any diferent from the other 23 hours of programming.

a refresh of the newsroom, a new desk and a couple of new presenting points (like CNNI’s new set) around the newsroom would be great.

  6. This is your chance SKY to make your news more credible, ie: stop rehashing the same stuff from 9 and 7 – and make interactive Widescreen

  7. “Sky National News with Jim Waley”

I wonder how this show will be different from Sky’s other 23 hours of programming a day which is all basically exactly the same

    First Edition
    NewsDay
    NewsHour
    Evening News
    NewsNight

I don’t know how any of these are different from each other

And isn’t all news on Sky national?

  8. Sky National News re-hashed from 7 & 9 news.

This is not new programing. Sky news was always a national service, nother, ever was state based.

Rehashed news from a tired old wannabe.
