Keeping up appearances

Six months on from film their makeover for 10 Years Younger in 10 Days, one couple admits it's hard to keep up their new look.

1oyyOne of the couples on 10 Years Younger in 10 Days, Neil (whose makeover was even likened to David Gyngell) and Annette Larsen have given an interview on their progress, now six months since the show was filmed.

Back in their remote Queensland hometown of Middlemount, they admit to having some trouble upkeeping the health and beauty regimes they were given, but remain grateful to the show.

In their $40,000 makeover they were nipped, tucked, Botoxed and plumped. Now, Neil’s hair is getting long and his beard is growing back. The exercise and eating plans dictated by their personal trainers have almost gone out the window. The Botox has worn off and their comfortable old wardrobes are beginning to make a comeback.

“We had an awesome time and I liked going down (to Sydney) to do it but I probably wouldn’t do it again,” Neil, 43, said.

He also admitted failing to follow his diet and exercise program.

“I’m more sort of a meat person and there wasn’t too much meat down there,” he said. “I haven’t done too much exercise. I used to walk a fair bit but I haven’t done it for a fair while. I suppose I should get back into it.”

Neil has kept off the four kilos he lost, and even continues to use facial products.

“We look after our skin better now than what we did before,” he said.

40yo Annette said keeping up appearances was hard in a town of just 3000 people.

“We’ve only got a surf shop in town, with T-shirts, so we go to Rocky (Rockhampton) or Mackay (a three-hour drive away),” she said. “I’ve only worn my makeover outfit once since I got it. You can’t go wearing it too much out here.”

But the couple said their confidence had soared since the show, with Neil happy to smile for the first time in his life, after receiving more than $20,000 worth of dental work.

Seven’s new show, which sourced participants in several regional areas, is charting well with bumper audiences in its 9:30pm timeslot.

  1. I live in Middlemount, Ive never needed a makeover…nor do i want one, because i don’t need it. I work out, I dress how i want. I don’t let the community dictate what i want to wear…be proud of how you look!

  2. i want to eneter my parents in this how can i do it ????? They have had hard life and i would love the opportunbity to make them feeel special!!!

    Kind regards camilla

  3. Take Guerilla Gardeners for example Craig, The Newtown makeover they did has turned into a wasteland again, well not that bad, the play stop sign is still up and the gazeebo but the grassy mound chairs are gone and the plants around the edges are all dead.

As for this, its not really a reflection on the show, its a reflection on how committed the couple are to changing themselves, its about their determination to take better care of their bodies and watching what they eat.

  4. @craig: I’ve often thought that too about the backyard blitz make overs and other shows, but particularly yard makeovers, i’m sure a lot of them wouldn’t be kept up in the condition they should be, because that would be pretty hard.

  5. I saw this in the Sunday paper, it’s always nice to see this type of thing months later, I’d love to see what becomes of some of the homes and gardens made over on countless shows, it could be a whole new series!
