Renewals, axings and yet-to-be-determined

Here's a round-up on renewals of some key US titles airing on Aussie networks.

greys-anatomy927-161The Australian today has a feature article on renewals of US dramas, and how they impact with Aussie networks.

Here’s a round-up on some of the key titles:

Seven’s US line-up will continue to include Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy and Lost, which return for their sixth seasons.

Brothers and Sisters
and Ugly Betty enter their fourth seasons, Private Practice its third and 30 Rock has been renewed, although it has not had as much success here as it in the US. And troubled sci-fi series Heroes will run for another season.

TEN will lose Life, which has been cancelled, but The Office and drama staple Law & Order: Special Victims Unit have been renewed (actors Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni are yet to be confirmed).

Medium‘s future is unclear (following early, misleading reports it was renewed) but TEN should be pleased that CBS looks like commissioning an NCIS spin-off series. TEN introduces the characters later this month in a double NCIS ep.

Samantha Who? and My Name is Earl have been dumped.

Fringe is renewed, but Nine is unlikely to get excited, unless we can hope it screens on the expected entertainment channel.

  1. Boston Legal
    My Name Is Earl
    Life

That’s 3 strikes & my favourite TV viewing is outtta here!
Damn it… Send the TV execs to Mexico for a group
    hug’n’sneeze party.

  2. Rick, yes, Nine was editing Fringe both to shorten its running time and to censor it to fit their idea of an M rating. The first episode was a prime example – I posted about what they’d chopped out on DTVforum (I think) at the time – but subsequent episodes were also (often quite clumsily) chopped to remove scenes or shots presumably deemed too confronting for Nine’s sensitive viewers.

After 3 episodes of this, I started sourcing the show elsewhere (which, as it turns out, was a wise decision!)

  3. Ditto Harry. I don’t know why Life did not rate higher, even in it’s homeland. After all these CSi and Dark cop type shows I found this a breath of fresh air. Will be sadly missed.

  4. This & isnt what i had expected. I hope boston legal gets a spin off. I on the other hand i have finished writing a pilot episode for the boston legal spin off called “shore’s team”. David what do u think of that?

  5. I thought Life was ok.. but not my favourite show! Glad to see the NCIS spin off thing being comissioned. So they are airing Legend Pt 1, Legend Pt 2 on the same night?

Has Season 7 for NCIS been renewed?

  6. RIck, i don’ t know if anyone could tell – they overrun every program so it could be that they ran more ads or just didn’t tell the guides that it ran for 70 minutes instead without cutting content. That is what they should have done – ran it from 8.30-9.40 and then tell the guides exactly that, that way people know exactly when it starts and finishes, and conspiracy theories don’t arise.

  7. Don’t know where you heard My Name Is Earl has been cancelled David, but all my sources haven’t reported anything about that yet and NBC hasn’t mad an announcement about it, not that the networks normally do, but the upfronts for NBC haven’t happened yet.

Earl is pretty much as good as gone, but still hasn’t been confirmed.

  8. I read on Wikipedia (a questionable source?) that on when Fringe aired on Nine it was actually an “edited” version to meet time requirements. Can anyone confirm that? If that’s true it’s just as well they aren’t screening it. Who wants a program that’s been mucked around with?

  9. @ Andrew B. I don’t think HIMYM has been officially picked up yet, but it is more that likely. Even if CBS don’t pick it up, abc will – so it’s definitely going to return. Similar situation for Old Christine.

  10. Shame about Earl, i looked at the ratings for the last US airing and they were really bad, dropping .5 in the demo from the previous week. Probably because the episode was the second of a bad two parter, which i haven’t seen so i won’t pass judgement. I’m hoping FOX picks it up, but it may be over the line in terms of syndication already, so we’ll have to wait and see.

Actually despite what the Australian says, i don’t believe NBC have made an announcement on the show yet.

  11. Earl – dumped? Nooooooo. Last season was a bit rubbish, butI’ve been really enjoying this season so far. Does this mean C7 are going to drop schedule it outside 11pm?

Any word on how i met your mother?

  12. “Nine is unlikely to get excited, unless we can hope it screens on the expected entertainment channel.”

Now that is something you don’t see very often – Nine and entertainment in the same sentence !!!

  13. Last I heard Samantha Who? was coming back for a 3rd season, it still has several unaired eps in the US, I hope it’s back.

Yeah ch9 showing Fringe, don’t hold your breath….

  14. What is wrong with TV when Heroes (not so much “troubled” as directionless) gets renewed while “Life” is canned? Another great show to join the growing list of wasted opportunities.

Just a technicality on Lost – it was guaranteed one more season. The deal was done two years ago.
