Returning: The Wire

Critically acclaimed US drama returns with its fifth season, but in a deadzone timeslot.

the_wireCritically acclaimed drama The Wire returns to Nine this month -but in a dead-zone timeslot once more.

The HBO series set in Baltimore returns with the fifth season premiere “More with Less,” airing at 1am on Wednesday May 20th (Tuesday night).

This aired in the US in January 2008.

The Wire is lauded by critics and feted by awards shows for the way it parallels the war on terror through the chronicling of the war on drugs.

As McNulty and the detail continue staking out Marlo’s crew, recently promoted Sergeant Carver is welcomed by a cauldron of discontent from officers coping with unpaid overtime. Stars Dominic West, Seth Gilliam and Aidan Gillen.

  1. I just worked out that you can download the whole season 5 of the wire on itunes aussie store for $30.00. Only thing that keeps me from doing it is that each episode is about 600mb which would really eat up my bandwidth. This is such an excellent show. Its a travesty for nine to bury it at 1am. But just add this to the list of other programs – Sopranos, Curb, Enterprise, NipTuck (nine); Shield, Office, Battlestar (ten); 30 rock, lost, heroes, 24 (seven). There is so much great tv that Australians never get to appreciate. Instead we get bombarded by endless formulaic mindnumbing shows like CSI, Law and Order franchises. Its like if the show requires the viewer to have to recall a story line that runs more than one episode then the networks think that no one will watch it.

  2. I wonder what WIN regional and Nine Adelaide will do with this?

Beacuse the present occupier of that timeslot, The Baron, gets shifted to 4:30am Sundays on WIN, and Nine Adelaide don’t even bother airing it at all. Seems like 12 hour old re-runs of The Ellen Degeneres Show are more important to the programmers at WIN…

  3. epic lulz that a turd like underbelly rates and the wire languishes at 1am. not that it matters, many fans already have watched the 5th season long ago.

  4. I’ve never seen this show, but am intriged by the reveiws. I will be o/s in bali when the fifth season returns, perhaps I might look for the season dvds there.

  5. If you are going to record it, be sure to set your recorder to start at 12.50 so you don’t miss the start of the show. Don’t rely on 9’s EPG which never makes any adjustment for late or early starting shows.

  6. Love this show but would much rather download or watch on DVD than tune in to 9 at a ridiculous time. I agree with ‘Zambora,’ how many episodes of 2 1/2 Men do Nine want to show!! It’s ridiculous and that show is now outdated now that the boy has grown up.

  7. I started watching the first season on dvd ($15 special offer in jb hifi at the time, and i heard good things about the show, so i jumped on it), and got absolutely hooked on the show.

I just cannot believe how this gets dropped at a 1am timeslot. It just defies logic. I mean seriously – does anyone at C9 do their homework? This show is one of the most critically acclaimed cop shows – yet they keep putting on trash like bridezilla, ladette, and a dozen 2.5 men repeats.

My guess is that c9’s programmers think it’s a bit too cerebral for the average 9 viewer who’d rather have “adults only..” shows with current affair shows that are preoccupied with boob and bra stories.

  8. Am watching the DVD’s of tis excellent series at the moment. 2 things come to mind:
1 – There is simply no way I’d watch this on commercial TV due to flky editing
2- Channel Nine and it’s mostly dumbass audience are wasted on such a great show. Why even both showing it at 1AM – it’s insulting.

  9. 1am?
Obviously the 3000th repeat of 2 1/2 men or another 20-1 clip show comes first.
If The wire was on in evening slot, a chance I will watch.
    I do not watch 2 1/2men or 20-1 anymore.
Hence Nine advertisers – you do not get me
