Scrubs gets renewal

Scrubs ain't dead just yet with Zach Braff set for at least six more eps. Good news too for Castle, Dollhouse and maybe that Gossip Girl spin-off...

scrubs-braff_lPut away the defibrillator. Scrubs has been renewed by ABC.

The move comes as the main cast members who had no deals beyond the current eighth season were secured.

Zach Braff is set to come back for six episodes to transition the show to its new set-up. ABC and creator Bill Lawrence had said they envision the show continuing with a mix of original cast members and some of the interns introduced in its past US season.

The network also renewed Castle, which premieres tomorrow night on Seven, and the comedy Better Off Ted.

Elsewhere, sources say Fox has renewed Dollhouse for the fall season with a signifcant budget cut agreed to by Joss Whedon. The official announcement will not be made until Monday at the network’s upfront presentation, but the word is its another 13 episodes.

The Gossip Girl spinoff, Lily, is considered to now be in contention for midseason -better than dead at any rate.

  1. “Who knows what will come out of the genius mind of Bill Lawrence.”

Nothing, since he’s leaving the show >_<

Season 9 will be a mistake. But also, if they knew that season 9 was fairly likely, ABC could’ve gotten their ****ing act together with their writing. Way to write an extremely good series finale, but oh wait! The show is continuing! The “series” finale was excellent and a brilliant way to end the series.

  2. Not sure how anyone can say that the quality of Scrubs season 8 has been bad. As far as I am concerned since the move to ABC they have had some the best writing, story lines and filming of probably the last 3 seasons of Scrubs. Season 7 was a write off due o the writers strike.

The development of the characters in season 8 was profound in that we got see them finally “grow up”, topics like parenthood and relationships, while previously covered in past seasons, I don’t think were covered as well as they were in season 8. It had to happen.

As for Season 9. Who knows what will come out of the genius mind of Bill Lawrence. I am happy to just sit back and see what happens.

  3. I said I was hoping for a miracle Better Off Ted renewal on here a few weeks ago, and so many people said it had no chance. This news is so good. Also Dollhouse, fantastic. Not so thrilled with the Scrubs news. I want to watch it in a couple of weeks knowing that that is the end (finally). Good timing for the Castle announcement in Australia. Now we know if it is worth investing our time in.

  4. @tomothy, the 13th ep of Dollhouse was never intended for TV distribution – DVD release only (as the pilot was reshot meaning they had fulfilled their commitment to Fox to make 13 episodes – even tho 12 aired)…the 13th is a bit of a hotch potch apparently of scenes from the original pilot plus other newly filmed stuff. Not sure where I read this but it’s stuck in my mind.

  5. ok david.. you’ve gotta be kidding right??? your in the business of television?? and u still don’t know that the gossip girl spin off is now called valley girls….and where are these rumors about it starting midseason??? i heard that a beautiful life was going to start midseason

  6. FOX need to renew Terminator before Dollhouse; the show has come so far and deserves a 3rd season; Dollhouse will survive as a a short run season.

And with a new Terminator movie released this summer; it could only highten excitment for a new season of a terminator series….

  7. Whilst I did like the finale, Scrubs has dropped in quality so much and JD (well, everyone really, but especially JD) has become that much of a caricature of himself that a new cast is probably a good thing. There were maybe 4 or 5 truly great episodes in all of seasons 5-8.

  8. Scrubs just got a great send off I’m worried this movie may see it fade away. As for dollhouse they should reduce the budget by getting rid of Helo from Battlestar Galactica and the girl from neighbors they can not act!

  9. Not sure about Scrubs without Zach but will give it a go, Can’t wait for Cougartown.

Castle and Better off Ted are great, nice to see them return and ditto for Dollhouse but a budget cut, hope it doesn’t end up lame.

  10. Woohoo! “Better Off Ted” is great! I see it as very similar in its sensibilities to “Scrubs”, and a good successor for its fans. Though now it doesn’t need a successor, I suppose.

  11. Well I’m won’t be watching. The finale to Season 8 was a great way to close it off and it just seems that they are continuing because the network wants more episodes not because there is any more to tell of JD’s story. A mistake in my view… anyone remember “After MASH”?

  12. Very pleased to hear Scrubs is coming back. I just hope it’s not half assed.

The Dollhouse renewal is a surprise, it has been rating like a dog in the US, and it’s demo performances have been just as tragic.

  13. Dollhouse – fantastic. Scrubs – bad. They should not be renewing it. I loved Scrubs, but it was definitely past its prime. They managed to end it well, despite the two /terrible/ episodes in the Bahamas. It should not be coming back.

  14. Scrubs can cope without JD, there were a few season 8 episode where he was not it it at all, and another where was was only a voice over the phone. Personally, as much as I enjoy the show, it should have not been renewed.
Suprised about Dollhouse, last I heard FOX were not even showing episode 13 of season one.

  15. Better off Ted renewed? Didn’t see that coming, but then again, i didn’t see Dollhouse getting renewed either. I’ll have to check both those shows out during the off-season.

  16. I wonder how they’ll do it? It was a terrific 1 hour finale. Brought a tear to my eye, and we found out the janitor’s ‘real’ name.

Not saying it’s going to fail or be successful, but it’ll be interesting how it all comes together since Scrubs was basically rotating around J.D.

Good luck to Bill Lawrence – huge fan 🙂

  17. what a surprise. not sure i its a good thing but i was sure scrubs had finished.

good that zac is returning for 6 eps, do we know how many in total there will be?

i wonder if the new setup will go under a new name?

also good news about castle, i that could be a big thing.

  18. Yay More scrubs. The finale was perfect but i love the show so the more the better.
Scrubs Creator Bill Lawrence’s other pilot Cougartown with courteney Cox was picked up to.
