Sidney Sheldon, Shirley Temple and Cary Grant

What could the writer of I Dream of Jeannie possibly have in common with Shirley Temple and Cary Grant?

bobbysHeard the name Sidney Sheldon before?

If you love your nostalgic telly, you will know he created I Dream of Jeannie. But what else did he do?

Next week ABC has one of his movies,  The Bachelor And The Bobby Soxer

The film features Shirley Temple as a seventeen-year-old Susan Turner who develops a big crush on playboy artist Richard Nugent (Cary Grant), after he speaks at her school, and manages to sneak into his apartment.

Meanwhile, her older sister and guardian Margaret, a judge, (Myrna Loy) who’s already had dealings with Nugent in her courtroom, threatens him with jail if he doesn’t go along with her scheme to make Susan lose interest in him. But as Margaret gets to know the artist, she also becomes smitten.

The film’s screenplay won an Academy Award for Sidney Sheldon, who eventually became a best-selling novelist with published 18 novels which sold 300 million copies.

It airs 8:30pm Saturday, 23 May 2009 on ABC2.
