mkSBS Youth Orchestra Conductor and Artistic Director Matthew Krel died yesterday.

Under Mr Krel’s tutelage, the members of the SBS Youth Orchestra have performed in over 60 television programs and have toured and performed to live audiences all over the world. Many have gone on to professional careers in music performance.

The SBS Youth Orchestra has been developing the talents and skills of young musicians for more than 20 years. Mr. Krel’s vision over 20 years ago was to ensure that talented young musicians have the opportunity to experience live performances and recordings.

As a Russian émigré and music teacher, Mr. Krel was impressed by the incredible cultural diversity of aspiring musicians in Australia and in 1987 sought the support of multicultural and multilingual broadcaster SBS to ensure his orchestra members were able to experience live and televised performances to develop their passion and professionalism.

SBS Managing Director Shaun Brown said: “SBS is proud to have had such a long association with the SBS Youth Orchestra and is truly sorry to have to say farewell to its esteemed conductor and colleague Matthew Krel. Our thoughts and best wishes are with Matthew’s family and friends at this difficult time.”

SBS Youth Orchestra will continue to develop Mr. Krel’s vision.

A commemorative concert will be arranged early in 2010 to celebrate the life and energy of its founding conductor.
