Airdate: FIFA Confederations Cup

SBS will air 16 FIFA Confederations Cup matches from South Africa in the lead up to next year's World Cup.

parkIt’s still another 12 months before the 2010 FIFA World Cup, but reigning World Champions Italy, Spain and Brazil descend on South Africa for the biggest international football event in 2009, the FIFA Confederations Cup.

SBS will screen all 16 events from the first match between South Africa and Iraq shown live at 11.30pm (AEST) on Sunday 14th June to the final at 4.00am (AEST) on Monday 29th.

In addition to the match coverage, SBS will showcase a half hour highlights program after each match day and host a dedicated website.

“FIFA Confederations Cup is the premier football event in 2009, bringing together the best teams and biggest stars as the countdown to the 2010 FIFA World Cup begins,” said SBS Head of Sport, Ken Shipp.

“Our audience can expect SBS to do what we do best; comprehensively cover major football events online and live on free-to-air television.”

Match broadcasts will be hosted by David Basheer and Les Murray and SBS chief football analyst, Craig Foster, heads up an extensive team of experts including Francis Awaritefe, John Aloisi, David Zdrillic, Ned Zelic, Gary van Egmond, Branko Culina and SBS Radio’s Tony Palumbo.

Mariana Rudan will host the highlights program and The World Game‘s Scott McIntyre and Vitor Sobral will be on the ground in South Africa.

  1. Thats all great. As much as I would love to watch the game, I would also loved to have watched the opening ceremony so we can feel the atmosphere. Its really stupid that they are not going to be airing the ceremony and build up to the 1st game.

  2. Agreed about Basheer- fine studio host, very bland commentator.

David, any chance of putting in a question to SBS about getting Simon HIll over for the World Cup Coverage from Fox?

After he first left SBS, he did a couple of internationals for SBS, and they said “and here’s our commentator, Simon Hill, thanks to fox sports.”

He’s far and away the best football commentator in Oz.

  3. so glad soccer is shown on sbs and foxtel rather than the commercial networks , this way all games are shown live and in all states, its for this reason i hope the a-league never kets picked up the commercial networks.

  4. I am looking forward to it.

It is a lot of live football involving top teams from around the world on FTA. Plus it is a chance to see how well South Africa hosts the tournament.

I think the games are held at 11.30pm and 4am EST. So they should be able to show them live without interupting usual programming. (WIth the exception of the final group games which are played simultaneously)
