Airdate: My Family Feast

SBS new cooking show will bring grandmothers, grandfathers, aunts, uncles and second cousins from diverse cultures to share a family meal.

scStuck on food? SBS hopes so. It has a new primetime series about families and food.

My Family Feast is a new 13 part series that will feature award-winning chef Sean Connolly, who runs two restaurants at Sydney’s Star City – Sean’s Kitchen and Astral.

Part cultural profile, part cooking show, it will feature Australians with diverse ethnic backgrounds who generously invite viewers into their homes and introduce their families and share their cultural traditions.

Very sensibly, it even defines ‘family’ as a group of people who come together to eat, to talk, to have fun and to  support each other: a group of people who are very often in a strange land trying to retain their traditional culture and to live and understand a new culture.

The show will focus on one family per episode, profiling Greek, Italian, Congolese, Chinese, Mandaean Iraqi, Serbian, Afghan and Cuban families. Members of the entire family – grandmothers, grandfathers, aunts, uncles and second cousins – are all involved.

“The concept of My Family Feast is incredible…to be invited to share food with some of this country’s most interesting and diverse families, is a true privilege. It is amazing to see how food really forms the basis of these  intricate family relationships,” says Connolly.

“Australia is such a multicultural society, and as a result, offers an incredibly diverse range of cooking traditions and cuisine. My Family Feast builds on this, profiling our rich and diverse immigration history with a focus on traditional family recipes.

“Being an immigrant myself, I understand the difficulty of transitioning between countries. I also understand the importance of holding onto your heritage and your culinary history.”

It premieres  Thursday August 27 at 7.30pm on SBS ONE.
