Cameras roll on Underbelly 3 in August

Nine's third series, to fill in the gaps between the first and second, begins filming in August.

underbellytrimbole1Underbelly‘s third series will start shooting in August, according to news.com.au.

Writer and producer Peter Gawler is tight-lipped about the content of the next series but says some of the action will be set in Sydney’s western suburbs.

“It will fill the chronological gap between Underbelly 2 and Underbelly 1 and start in the late 1980s and run through to the mid-to-late ’90s,” Gawler said.

This is a period in which police corruption was rife and eventually led to the Wood Royal Commission from 1994 to 1997.

Producers have previously gone on the record to indicate it will not, as rumoured, include the Russell St. bombing in Melbourne.

It is expected to air next February.

  1. In relation to Jake’s comments. I can assure you inaccuracies do mean a lot if they affect you personally. My partner Russell committed suicide. To date, there have been two re enactments of his suicide as well as a lot of hearsay regarding what happened. It has been challenging to read the news knowing the media have not verified their facts, hence, what is written is propaganda often fuelled by speculation and fear.
I hope the Underbelly writers and producers demonstrate their professionalism by ensuring they have their facts right.

  2. What’s up with people and the moaning about the inaccuracies? They had to squeeze in as much as they could within the timeframe of 1976 to 1987. How can it be accurate anyways? Nobody exactly knows what was said, what actually took place? They go with the theories, and pretty much do whatever they want with it. They try and stick with the facts. If you put too much accuracy to it, you may as well call it Crime Investigation Australia.

  3. Personally I’d like to see a portion of season 3 devoted to the Pettingill family. They were around in the 80’s with the Walsh street murders and sound like they would be interesting characters…

  4. Bah. There’s too much whingeing going on here. I enjoyed season 2 more than season 1 and will really look forward to Nine churning out more. If they can crack an ongoing formula, and keep the same creative staff, then good for them. I sure would love a few more history lessons from other decades too.

Of course yes it’s bad when it’s inaccurate. I really hope Wikipedia is there to save us after each series.

    CK.

  5. A 4th series focusing on NSW crime, that’d tell the same story as the one in
Blue Murder, but in much more detail, is probably about as far as this show can go.

  6. I bet Nine are really looking forward to this. They’ve probably already started conceiving seasons 4 and 5 already. Its been suggested that the Sydney Bikie Wars or Ned Kelly’s gang will be in future plots, knowing Nine, thats a likely possibility.

  7. Let the Underbelly jokes continue…

I was at BigW the other day and saw stacks of the 2nd series DVD on shelves, unlike the original which you were battling to find without pre-ordering it, maybe the magic is going the re-run ratings were a joke. This is looking more and more like a one shot deal for Nine a show unlikely to do well in re-runs. Have they sold the rights to PayTV yet?
