Dancing with the Stars: 2009 contestants

Lincoln Lewis, Kylie Gillies, Adam Brand, Rob Mills, Jess McNamee and even Matt White line up for Seven's dance card.

dancing-daniel-soniaSeven has revealed its next dance cast for Dancing with the Stars, which includes four network personalities and blind paralympian Gerrard Gosens. Personalities from radio, performing arts, sports and a swimsuit model will fill out the rest of the dance card.

Amongst the Seven names are Lincoln Lewis, Jess McNamee, Kylie Gillies and Today Tonight‘s Matt White – a somewhat curious choice given the normally serious nature of news and current affairs. Still, those days are arguably long gone, and Seven news presenters have previously appeared on the show.

The series will be again hosted by Daniel McPherson and Sonia Kruger and is expected to air Sunday July 5th.

Layne Beachley – dancing with Dannial Gosper
This fiercely talented surfer and astute business woman rewrote history when she achieved the greatest number of consecutive World Championship titles; male or female. With a total of seven world championships under her belt, Beachley’s determination and dedication will be hard to beat.

Emily Scott – dancing with Michael Miziner
This international swimsuit model and former gymnast was crowned “Australia’s Sexist Woman” by FHM Magazine, appeared in Robbie Williams Rock DJ music clip and has snagged a guest role on the cult TV series Entourage. With a bourgeoning DJ career on the rise, she’s definitely got rhythm but does she have the steps to match?

Kylie Gilles – dancing with Carmelo Pizzino
With her co-host Larry Emdur, Kylie Gillies serves up a mix of entertainment, news and humour five days a week on Channel Seven’s The Morning Show. She’s sung live on national television performing a duet with Irish crooner Ronan Keating, now she’s about to make her dancing debut.

Jess McNamee – dancing with Stefano Oliveri
This popular actress is known to millions of Australians as the unflappable Sammy from Channel Seven’s top-rating drama, Packed to the Rafters. Growing up with musical theatre, Jess is a natural performer, having scored a role in Home and Away not long after leaving school. But is she a natural dancer?

Fiona O’Loughlin – dancing with Craig Monley
Hailing from Alice Springs, Fiona “Full House” O’Loughlin is one of Australia’s most successful comediennes and a very busy mother of five! She has performed at the invitation only Montreal Comedy Festival and on the top-rating US program Last Comic Standing, but can she win over the judges on DANCING WITH THE STARS?

Peter ‘Spida’ Everitt – dancing with Linda de Nicola
Peter ‘Spida’ Everitt made his debut for St Kilda in a sea of dreadlocks and tattoos in 1993. As one of the game’s best ruckmen, he was in high demand playing for Hawthorn and the Sydney Swans during his envied AFL career. His huge following on the field led to the phenomenon that is the ‘spida dance’.

Rob Mills – dancing with Sriani Argaet
Currently playing the role of Fiyero in Wicked – the hottest musical theatre ticket in town – actor, singer, entertainer and former Australian Idol top 5 Rob Mills is looking to emulate his success on the dance floor . . .

Matt White – dancing with Ash-Leigh Hunter
Matt’s no stranger to stiff competition having covered some of the world’s elite sporting events during his career as a sports journalist and commentator for Channel Seven. He’s also leading the battle in the news and public affairs arena as East Coast host of Channel Seven’s top-rating Today Tonight.

Gerrard Gosens – dancing with Jessica Raffa
He’s climbed Mt Everest, swum with sharks and flown a motor glider around Queensland. In a Dancing with the Stars world first, Blind adventurer and three-time paralympian, Gerrard Gosens is about to face his greatest challenge ever when he takes to the dance floor with partner Jessica Raffa.

Lincoln Lewis – dancing with Luda Kroitor
He won a Logie for Most Popular New Talent in 2008 for his endearing portrayal of farm boy Geoff Campbell on Channel Seven’s Home and Away. Now Lincoln is looking to add another trophy to add to the mantle piece when he teams with Luda.

Adam Brand – dancing with Jade Hatcher
His latest album Hell Of A Ride débuted at No.1 on the ARIA Top 20 Australian Artist Country Chart and with eight Golden Guitars, three platinum and two gold albums, Brand is preparing for another challenge as a contestant in DANCING WITH THE STARS.

  1. I nthink the judges on dancing with the stars are up themselves. Like Marks comment when you’ve done what we’ve done then you can critise. Also how can they blame the dancer when the teacher does the choreography. Not Fair Guys. Do these judges think they are so perfect that they are Always Right. Get A grip judges

  2. I think Gerrards partner is doing an awesome job. Pity you can’t sew or super glue Todd’s eyes together, and let’s see how good he is. He certainly has tickets on himself, like tonight, saying he was born dancing. What a lot of crok.

Remember Todd, what goes around comes around. One day you will be sorry for the rude arrogant things that you say to people. Your turn is coming.

  3. I will not be watching the show anymore. As courageous as Gerrard is – He cannot dance. And after all it is a ‘dancing’ show. It is sad to see reasonably good celebreties being voted off the show for sympathy votes. I think the judges have been as nice as they can be up to this point. As far as Todd goes he is probably the most honest of all judges and I love his ocmments. Yes sometimes he can be a little rude but its all about dancing and improving.
I want to see ‘dancing’ so will now change channels and watch anything but this farce.
    You have lost a viewer!

  4. I think the comments by Tod with his comments on Jarrod are well founded. Tod is judging on a dancing competition not a charity event. I admire Jarrod for his attempt but being honest he just cannot dance and should not get through by sympathy votes.

  5. Let’s clarify one thing here people. Gerrard is not disabled. Obviously, he has been blind since birth or from a very early age. Colour and form mean little to him unless they can be felt physically or expressed emotionally. But in other ways he is more acute than you and I. His only disability in this competition is that he is not a channel seven celebrity.

Sympathy should be reserved for his partner who has to interpret her world so that Gerrard can perorm to expectations. Clearly, that is made doubly difficult by adjudicators who have no perspective. Their appalling scores represented a failure to recognize or even comprehend the passion and endeavour of a man giving his all. This show has reached an all time low in respect and dignity. In that,Todd is not alone.

  6. as usual people like mckenny and richey have been on the panel for way too long, the used to dance or whatever it was they did in their time but couldnt some one new and fresh with some non critical and old time remarks help the contestants with fresh ideas! then the rude and non respectful remarks can be taken of the table and so can the old lady and the big mouth with his bad ideas

    Get rid of them !!!!!!!!!

  7. Gerrard has entered a dancing competition and has maintained that he wants to be judged as the other compaeitors are. While the judges coments may sound harsh they are true. His dancing while comendable given his disability is nowhere near as good as that of the other competitors. It is unfair on the other competitors to allow his disability to disadvantage them, and on the judges who seem to be expected to excuse his poor dancing skills because of his disability.
It seems to me that he is geting votes based on his determination and courage, not his dancing skills. He has done extremely well and is an ispiration to those of us with disabilities but this is after all a dancing competition.

  8. The past couple of weeks with Gerrard have been amazing to watch. To me it isn’t a fair competition. Dancing is hard enough for all of the contestants to do as most have had no ballroom experience but to have never seen dance is more challenging than sighted people could ever conceive. He will be a good dancer but to train an unsighted person may take a lot mroe time thatn this competition will allow.

I think the judges comments do seem harsh, but they are realistic, the delivery of the comments perhaps should be a little more considered. However i think the comments are constructive and the people on the show are all competing as equals so they shoudl all be given fair constructive critisism.

The biggest dissapointment for me was the score Adam Brand received. How unfortunate that he was so harshly scored for the error of his instructor. She should know the difference between Quickstep and a show dance! As Mark said she knew the rules. He is doing an amazing job and I hope he continues in the competition.

  9. I feel that remarks made by the Judges regarding Gerrard are appauling & disrespectful towards the disabled community. I think He should be respected for his guts to do this as many people with disabilities are not able to do things such as this,& they respect people such as Gerrard & I would love to see how He would go if he had become blind or had any other disablities people like this have no common sense. That why the country is a mess & needs a serious look at itself, because Disability groups are finding it hard enough just to get support as it is.

  10. I was also disgusted with Todds remarks, i thought Gerrards dancing was very good and i smiled all through it. I thought the show was meant to be fun and entertaining, in my opinion the judges are trying to make themselves look more important. I would love to see them dance blind folded. They have quite runied the show for me… its abit of fun for the stars not a chosen career.

  11. I think Todd hit an all time low on tonights show, could he not see the response from the Audience. I was disgusted to hear how he degraded Gerrard tonight and was so mad that i voted straight away, something i havent done for this series so far. I was so proud and moved by his dance that i cried also like his Dance Partner, i only hope that the public support him in the coming weeks to prove Todd wrong.

  12. What a disgrace the comments made to Gerrard Gosens on tonights show were. Why are people without full physical ability being invited onto the show, if these things can’t be taken into consideration. Gerrard is doing a fantastic job, and is a pleasure to watch each week. I have a hard time taking Todd McKenney seriously on this show, and sadly, I was so offended by his comments that tonight will be the last time I watch. One word for Todd, Helen and Mark…..Appalling.

  13. i was very dissappointed in the remarks made to gerard on sunday night if chanel 7 is going to ask non television persons to compete maybe they should consider who they approach they knew gerard was blind so why ask him if they consider him not being able to complete the task that are requested of him let alone his self asteem in from of proberbly thousands of people shame on you forchanel 7 for allowing this to occur ,for all you fans of dwts vote to keep gerard in if he does not go out tonight

  14. I believe it would be a better competition and much better to watch if everyone was allowed to compete untill the end, then the couple with the most points be the winner.

It would allow all the couples to improve and be judged more fairly and would be more entertaining.

  15. The show tonight was a disgrace. Gerrard’s guide dog could see that Kylie Gillies tripped over her own feet and that of her partner and failed to complete her intended routine. After concurring with the judges that she messed up, Todd awarded an honest four while Mark and Helen threw in sevens.

So call me a sympathy voter, but Gerrard did not deserve a row of fives for his effort. He has sought no favor from the panel except to be judged as a dancer.
After three weeks, his performance is no better or worse than the middle of the field. He has my vote this week for endeavour.

It seems the judges cannot make up their minds about what is expected. One week it is a dance contest and the next it is about personality. Matt White was marked down previously for not having a personality while his tango was technically good. This week his jive was technically average and the personality shone through. It still wasn’t enough.

Lincoln will win. his physical strength , acting professionalism and endless youthful energy combined will come to the fore as he gains experience throughout the remainder of the competition. Viewer support for this popular actor from a well rated soapie can only enhance his progression though the eliminations. The only thing that can stop him is inconsistency from the judges.

  16. there were two songs from memory, the first was A Beautiful World, the version was an interpretation by a now disseased Hawaiian artist known as ” Iz” Israel Kamakawico”ole and the second was Mad World the balad has been covered by several artists (original by Tears for Fears) and is currently used as the background music on Snooze commercials. Both are beautiful songs.

  17. does anyone know what the song that was playing before gerrard danced it was a soft acoustic song with ohhh at the start ??
can someone pleasee help me ive been looking all over for it and im dying to know please tell me what the spng is called 🙂

  18. I always love the first show of the season, there is no painful pause at the end of each show as we wait to see who is unmercifully bumped. I love the progression of all the dancers as they discover their talent and love for dance. Those of you who have never danced and making the negative blogs should give dancing a try and see for yourselves what an amazing acheivement these contestants (somebodies or nobodies in your humble opinions) make.
