New shows celebrate 2 years of NITV

National Indigenous Television (NITV) turns two on July 13 and to celebrate has announced a raft of new programmes and a new on air look.

The channel screens to some 220,000 viewers, predominantly in the Northern Territory, metropolitan Sydney and via pay television.

As part of its new programmes it plans titles including Brenda Croft’s art series Culture Warriors, Intunes with Troy Cassar Daley, youth show Grounded Exposed and AFL show Marngrook in Sydney (pictured).

CEO Patricia Turner said: “NITV is a landmark television channel that has changed Australia’s media landscape forever. We have created the first ever all-Indigenous network that has taken our nation one step closer to closing the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples of this country. We aim at all times to present, preserve and promote our vibrant culture for the enjoyment of the entire country.

“I have said it before and I’ll say it again – from little things, big things grow. I am so very proud of our achievements over the last two years, which includes over 1000 hours of commissioned local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander content.”

The forthcoming shows includes:

Culture Warriors – Australian Television Premiere on Sundays @ 8.30pm from 5 July
A nine part showcase featuring the work of twenty eight artists from every state and territory that demonstrating the incredible range of contemporary Indigenous art practice. From painting on bark to sculpture to weaving and beyond.

Intunes – Australian Television Premiere on Thursdays @ 9pm from 16 July
A gritty and bold new country music series, filmed at the famed Tamworth Country music festival, which includes appearances and interviews with musical greats such as Troy Cassar Daley, Buddy Knox, Adam Harvey, Liyarn Ngarn, Feral Swing Katz, the McClymonts, Adam James and Young Guns.

Marngrook in Sydney – Australian Television Premiere on Thursday 9 July @ 7.30pm
The program quoted as ÁFL boss Andrew Demetrious’ favourite footy show, heads to Sydney for a live national broadcast. The show will feature a host of stars including Sydney Swans’ favourites Adam Goodes and Michael O’Loughlin, legendary Indigenous musician Vic Simms, 70’s Rockpile Jones from Ol’55 and Sydney out fit On the Prowl.

Milli Milli Nganka – Australian Television Premiere Fridays @ 9pm EST from 3 July
Written and Directed by well known producer Mitch Torres, Milli Milli Nganka is a magazine style series that features the picturesque top end of Australia. The area rich in culture is home to many different Indigenous tribes, some with shared histories, and some with totally different experiences, all with a story to tell.

Grounded Exposed – Australian Television Premiere Tuesdays @ 11pm EST from 7 July
The popular interview profile program Grounded aimed at teens gets all grown-up, and focuses on the far more serious side of Indigenous youth affairs.

Letterbox Pro – Australian Television Premiere @ 7.30pm EST from 4 July
Letterbox Pro is the adult version of the popular new kids program – Letterbox. Letterbox Pro is fun, fast and humorous, as leaders and decision makers of the Indigenous community come together to battle it out against each other to determine who is the best of the best at word games, spelling and grammar.

Lightening Cup – Australian Television Premiere @ 8am EST
AFL fans get ready as NITV presents the full carnival of the Lightening Cup filmed in Alice Springs.
