Nine refreshes Sydney News set

Sydney viewers yesterday saw a new-look Nine News 6pm bulletin.
It follows a leaked email in April from Sydney News Director Darren Wick promising, “a brand new set in Studio One. This will be a bigger, better home for Pete, Fergo, Kenny and Jaynie. And it’ll have more impact on the viewers at home, helping to re-establish our 6pm as the must-see news bulletin of the day.”
The set features the Sydney Harbour Bridge prominently in the background, described by Wick as “a cutting-edge set. It’s a set that takes news presentation in Australia to a whole new level.”
“We’ve seen the commitment from the network and David Gyngell to the Nine News brand and the new set is just another demonstration of the importance of news and current affairs to this network’s battle to be No.1.”
Nine still has a long way to go in the Sydney market, last week averaging 355,000 to Seven News’ 438,000 on weeknights.

Wick previously indicated This Afternoon would launch in June, a one-hour programme set to air from 4:30pm weekdays hosted by, “amongst others,” Mark Ferguson with reporters including Peter Harvey.

How could you possibly like green screens? They are so unrealistic and look too ‘perfect.’ I like the use of the plasmas in this set. It’s good to see Nine tieing in all their news sets. Today Show, Early News, 6pm News now all use plamsas as a background. It’s quite a fresh look when compared to green screens.
No doubt Nine News Melbourne needs a facelift, and a massive one too.
Hopefully Nine’s new 4:30 show has a good set, but more importantly, decent news and current affairs.

Seven’s four year old set still looks slicker than Nine’s new set.
I expect the Melbourne set to get a face-lift as well if Nine News over here continues to rate poorly.
Talk about going back to the past. When is Australian news going to catch up to other countries like the UK and have full screen graphics on green screen, and even move to standing up for the news. Aussie news looks so dated.
It’s going to take a whole lot more than a new set. They need to take a look at their news values. Last night they had a Danny Weidler piece in support of Matthew Johns and tried to pass it off as news; it even ran before the first break.
Yep, good work, because as we all know when we watch the news we are after a good looking set. 🙂
