Peter Lloyd to be released from Changi

Former ABC foreign correspondent Peter Lloyd is to be released from jail in Singapore today, reportedly following good behaviour.

peterlloyd21Former ABC foreign correspondent Peter Lloyd is expected to be released from Singapore’s Changi prison today, reports the ABC. A source close to Lloyd says his sentence was reduced due to good behaviour.

Last December he was sentenced to 10 months in prison for possessing the drug ‘ice’ and drug paraphernalia. He admitted using the drugs after covering traumatic events such as the Bali bombings and the Boxing Day tsunami for the ABC.

Lloyd was originally due to co-host ABC News Breakfast for ABC2, but was replaced after the Singapore arrest.

No doubt his story will now be pursued by Australian media after he is released.

  1. I’d been wondering recently while watching News Breakfast ,how he was doing, and when he would get out. He was seriously traumatised going into prison through his experiences both personally, and professsionally in the stories he covered, and will surely need a lot of friendship and support to sort his life out.

Unlikely, but I hope the media go easy on him, and allow him the chance to recover, and should he choose (and the ABC allow), go back to work in the media in some form or another.

Drug use isn’t good, especially not in countries that lock you up for relatively small offences, but given the trauma he has suffered to bring us the stories he has over the years he deserves a second chance.
