Rumour: Futurama in 13 episode deal?

"Good news everyone!" Another 13 eps of Futurama look like becoming a reality.

futurama_profWay back in February actor Billy West hinted that Futurama could go back into production.

Now US media website Collider says it has been given a 13 episode order by Comedy Central.

Though still technically a rumor at this point, production offices have already opened and that casting is about to move forward.

  1. I found your blog on google and read a few of your other posts. I just added you to my Google News Reader. Keep up the good work. Look forward to reading more from you in the future.

  2. I’ve enjoyed the DVD movies and loved the writing over the 4 season run. I can’t wait to get back into some multi-layered, nerd-core cartoon episodes. Futurama is miles ahead of The Simpsons.

  3. @ Sillygostly: Thanks for the info, makes sense now as to why it hasn’t aired in AU yet. I was going off the release of the first 2 movies which aired not too long after their dvd release.

  4. Re: Paull

I saw all of about the first 20 minutes of Bender’s Game and the last 20 after falling asleep during it.

What I do remember of it was not funny despite the fact the previews looked so fun.

  5. I wouldn’t expect Seven to sell the rights to Family Guy and American Dad as they rate reasonably well and have established audiences, however, I don’t understand why they won’t sell King of the Hill to Ten. They’re 2 and a half seasons behind the U.S. :-/ Sure, it won’t attract record-breaking numbers, but surely there’d be an audience for it if Ten advertised it really well and played it alongside its other animated shows.

    @ Paull

Bender’s Game recently aired in the U.S., however an airdate for Into The Wild Green Yonder is yet to be confirmed. Ten will most likely play out the remaining Futurama eps once Masterchef wraps up.

Seven has the rights to both Family Guy and American Dad. They will not sell them to TEN and TEN will never ever get them. The reason is that when Seven had the FOX deal they acquired these shows and TEN cant get them. American Dad is due later this year on Seven when Heroes finishes up. Its not 100% confirmed but it seems likely that it is where it will be placed. Futurama will be on TEN because they acquired the show because Seven didnt want it. Seven want FG and AD so there is no way the comedy block will happen. It may with Simpsons, Cleveland and Futurama but not the other 2.

  7. “Oh I’m so excited I wish I could wet my pants!” – Bender

Very much looking forward to this, especially given the cliffhanger that ended the last movie, Into The Wild Green Yonder!

  8. Good news indeed, my favourite animated comedey, i thought it passed the simspons a long time ago as the best. Ten will get the rights (Thank God they got the Fox deal, not Seven). They now have the Simpsons, Clevland and Futurama so i cant see a comedy block, but i can see them arining the simpsons, followed by cleveland, then when Cleveland finishes its run, replaced by new Futurama. Hopefully this will reboot this show, the movies were good, but spliiting 4 movies into 16 eps was just stupid.

  9. Yay Futurama! Hopefully it won’t take years to come to fruition.

I hope ch 10 stays well away from American Dad and Family Guy – don’t want the one decent commercial channel turning into sh**!!

  10. @RichoTB:

An animated comedy block would be awesome in my opinion!
American Dad is going to be coming back soon, so TEN should try to poach that, and when they get the chance they should try and get Family Guy too.
Having a block of American Dad, Cleveland, The Simpsons, Futurama and Family Guy would be awesome.

  11. David, Do you happen to know when/ if Ten will air the last two futurama movies? I’ve been waiting for ages to see bender’s game, and the last movie (i’m a bit cheapo and don’t want to fork out $30 for the dvd, $15 would be reasonable though).

  12. Yaay! 😀

    @ RichoTB

The chopped up Futurama movies rated poorly due to awful scheduling on Ten’s part. When Ten first aired Bender’s Big Score, they played it out over four weeks at a 7.30pm slot, followed by a repeat; and since these episodes are intended to be watched in sequence, this move would undoubtably have confused viewers. I’m pretty sure the premiere rated at over a million , but ratings dipped significantly by the 4th episode.

The second movie also tanked because it was added as a last minute scheduling change (accompanied with a painfully generic promo). Big Brother’s poor lead-in and stiff competition didn’t help matters either.

  13. It’s impossible to read “good news everyone” without the Professor’s voice in your head.

Hopefully going back to standalone episodes will bring back the greatness of Futurama that the four movies struggled with.

  14. Will this even be worth the effort? If it does go ahead it would be an idea for Ten to do a 2 hour animated comedy block with this, Cleveland and The Simpsons. The Futurama movies rated really badly though, I don’t see them being rushed over to air here anytime soon.
