Sam Newman launches stinging attack on John Elliott

Sam Newman calls former Carlton president a "stupid, selective pariah" following his comments about 'hush money.'

snfsThe Footy Show‘s Sam Newman tonight unleashed a tirade against former Carlton Football Club president John Elliott, following his recent comments about “hush” money allegedly paid by the club to women following accusatons of sexual assault.

Newman delivered a stinging editorial on air directed at John Elliott in which he quoted from the writings of British poet and politician Thomas Macaulay (1800 – 1859). Macaulay had attacked lawyer James Boswell’s (1740 – 1795) over his biography Life of Samuel Johnson.

“Nature had made him a slave and an idolater,” said Newman. “His mind resembles those creepers which the botanists call parasites, and which can subsist only by clinging round the stems and imbibing the juices of stronger plants.”

Directed at Elliott, Newman was unrelenting.

“‘Jack’ if you’re listening you are a stupid, selective pariah and you want to wake up to yourself. You’ve just set that club back and all their great work,” he said.

“Its just about you… you’ve got your head up your arse, mate.”

John Elliott today co-operated with Victoria Police enquiries over his statement, which also drew comment from Channel 31 after they were discussed on his community television football show, Big Jack and Kouta.

  1. Trust Sam to want to sweep everything under the carpet along with his own sordid past. Support the victims and bring these animals to justice. I am actually a Carlton supporter but there is no excuse.

  2. Sorry I fell asleep and missed the footy show. Please support Sam in this sad saga.Don’t turn on the victims.Don’t justify it by saying other clubs have their own scandals.Maybe its symptomatic of a club that flouted A.F.L rules and saw fit to thumb its nose at society’s values.

  3. Why is he so angry? Possibly because once again the football has been shown to be a pathetic boys clubs with their own set of rules?

I don’t doubt for a second that these sort of payments have been made and you would be incredibly naive to think otherwise.

  4. So he thinks it all should’ve been swept under the carpet. Might be worried a few other clubs have done the same thing. There’s already other well documented cases.

  5. And suddenly i like Sam Newman again. See this is what i want from the Footy Show. Good honest opinions on football stories. Not Crawford’s childish antics.
