Thank God for Hillsy

Thank God You're Here first-timer Adam Hills tells TV Tonight the comedy show should really be called 'I Wish I'd Said That!'

hills1This week Adam Hills makes his first appearance on Thank God You’re Here, alongside Julia Zemiro, Anh Do and Colin Lane.

Hills told TV Tonight he loved every second of being on the improv show.

“Working Dog are an incredible group of people, they look after you,” he said. “At one point I walked on set for the pre-recorded stuff a couple of days before-hand.

“And they made sure I had a jacket because it was cold. So I was all done up in costume and just before I walked on to film I went to take the jacket off and before I even got my arm out of the sleeves, someone had taken it for me. And I thought, ‘Oh my God you people are efficient!'”

For his debut, the Spicks and Specks host was in good hands, being directed by his own show’s director, Jon Olb. But it was Glenn Robbins who gave him the best advice.

“It was such a lovely, well-oiled and supportive machine. You get there on the night and Glenn Robbins comes up to you and says, ‘Listen what you did the other day was just a hit up in the nets. You’ve got the feel for it. Tonight you’re actually out on the pitch. You don’t have to hit every ball. Some will go wide, some you don’t want to hit so just choose the ones you want to play at. If you hit a couple of sixes that’s fine, but don’t worry too much about it.'”

After successfully conquering his solo sketch, Hills was ready for the final ensemble sketch. But not without some analysis of his debut performance.

“After I did my bit I was in costume waiting for the ‘All-In’. And I was standing backstage looking off into the distance thinking about the scene that I had just done. And going over in my head what I should have done and shouldn’t have done,” he said.

“Anh Do came running up to me and said ‘Don’t! Don’t go over it in your head! You were great, let it go!’ That’s what everyone does.”

“I’m not sure it should be called Thank God You’re Here I think it should be called I Wish I’d Said That!”

Thank God You’re Here
airs 7:30pm Wednesday on Seven (Thursday in Sydney & Brisbane).

  1. He must have been watching 30 Rock because he’s mastered the back door compliment, perfected by Jenna. For anyone who doesn’t know what a back door compliment is, it is when you indirectly brag about yourself. Her example, “I just can’t watch American Idol because I have perfect pitch.”

  2. I didn’t know they were so efficient either! Sounds like a great bunch of people to work with!

And can’t wait to see Adam’s first time appearance on the show. Now please get Myf on there love her hehe!
