Toni Collette, Simon Baker and Rose Byrne have all been nominated for acting awards in the 2009 Emmys.
They have been nominated for United States of Tara, The Mentalist and Damages respectively.
Cable television dominates the Outstanding Drama category with Big Love, Breaking Bad, Dexter and Mad Men competing with Damages, House and Lost.
In comedy Entourage, Flight of the Conchords and Weeds take on 30 Rock, How I Met Your Mother, Family Guy and The Office. Family Guy is the first animated series in nearly 50 years to be nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series.
New Zealand’s Jemaine Clement is also nominated in the comedy actor category.
This year the major categories were broadened from five to six nominees.
The Emmys will be hosted by Neil Patrick Harris on September 20 and screens in Australia 10am Monday September 21st on Arena.

Meant to say as well I’d be willing to lay a few dollars down on William Shatner for Boston Legal winning the Supporting Actor in a Drama Series as well, thinking this will be the last time The Shat will be up for an award (surely he won’t get a nom for his chat show), so I figure the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences will give him the nod.
Mad Men isn’t that good…
Oh and, sorry to double post but, yay for Kristin’s nomination for Pushing Daisies. If she wins, the other results will not matter for me, as it will be the highlight of my night!!!
Considering Damages is on FX, wouldn’t that mean only House and Lost are the only two non-cable shows going for Outstanding Drama Series?
Or is FX on US free-to-air?
Hope Jim Parsons gets one for his role in The Big Bang Theory, the guy has a Phone Book full of lines every episode and pulls them off wonderfully, also would love to see Alan Alda win for 30 Rock, that line he had in the last episode of Season 3 was one of the best in a long time in any show.
I really hope Michael Emerson gets the Emmy he deserves for his work on Lost as the seemingly evil yet misunderstood Benjamin Linus, he is easily the best actor on a show that has some of the finest male actors currently on television (Terry O’Quinn, Ken Leung, Jeremy Davies, Naveen Andrews and Henry Ian Cusick). Really Thought Jeremy Davies portrayal of Daniel Faraday deserved a nomination, certainly more than Christian Clemenson from Boston Legal.
How can anyone think two and a half men deserves any sort of emmy consideration? It is the representation of how bad sitcoms have become, cheap lazy predictable writing. And thank god the office does not have a laugh track, anyone who needs canned laughter to tell them whats meant to be funny does not know what comedy is. At least i can be comforted knowing 30 Rock will win. Think back a few years when Arrested Development was winning the emmy, the best comedy since Seinfeld, now there is true comedy gold.
Speaking of Gold, where is Jeremy Piven! he has been nominated for the best supporting actor in a comedy series for his portrayal of Ari Gold 4 years in a row, winning the last 3…And not even a nomination this year? Yet Neil Patrick Harris and John Cryer are? So Confusing.
I think Bryan Cranston will win best actor again, as he’s outstanding, and Breaking Bad is such an excellent show.

I would love to see Dexter recognised this year. Brilliant writing and acting in a show that dares to be different!
As much as I love 30 Rock, I thought this year’s season of The Office was superior (closely followed by FOTC). Amy Ryan should have scored a Guest Actress nom for her role as Holly Flax. Good to see Kristin Chenoweth nominated again for Daisies.. hopefully she’ll finally get the recognition she deserves in this role.
@ callas , agree often you see actors classed as supporting cast even though there in in just as much as what’s classed as the lead, to me a supporting cast member would be Conchata Ferrellberta(berta)if it where for actress, but john is the show just as much as Charlie and his role is just as important and influential to the show.
im most looking forward to the most outstanding comedy series as most of those shows i watch and a such a diverse range of shows are nominated, also good good to see family guy nominated. i’m really surprised that an animated series has never been nominated before. like seth MacFarlane said it doesn’t matter which medium your working in but whether your producing a quality of half hour of comedy or not.
callas – I totally agree Cryer is the better actor by far – anyone who can put themselves through that much humiliation and keep a straight face deserves an Emmy, however, it’s up to the actors themselves which category they nominate for. I remember the first year of Friends all the cast nominated as ‘supporting actor’ because they felt no-one was the lead.
I’m amazed that Sarah Silverman was nominated as best actress – she’s funny – but it’s not exactly acting is it?
Right now that sound you can hear is critics all over America screaming that Weeds got nominated but Big Bang Theory didn’t!

And wow the comedy section is SAD and reflects the decline of the format except for modern classics like T&AHM and TBBT.
And lol at HIMYM being nominated..it’s amusing but still a pretty average show. Perhaps it was one of NPH’s demands 🙂
Family Guy is just bad and nothing but a string of terrible pop culture references.
The Office needs a laugh track to make it actually seem like it’s..you know..funny!
Weeds is the only quality show there but it’s hardly a comedy..more a dramedy.
wow those are some big names in the miniseries or movie categories.. hopefully we get to see them on our tv soon… and whats the deal with jon cryer as supporting actor and charlie sheen as best actor when it is clearly evident to those who watch the show that jon’s character has more depth and puts in more air time whilst charlie sits around, smirks, occasionally utters a good line, drinks scotch and smokes a cigar … it clearly helps when your name is charlie sheen !!

Also interesting the number of shows the networks passed on now with Emmy chances even though I don’t but too much stock in the awards after Lauren Graham never got a single nom even after they changed the system specifically for that reason!
I hope Toni wins and the ABC2 has a hit with her new show, maybe moving it to their main channel 🙂
