Lock it in, Eddie.

A contestant on Hot Seat said she had 2 seconds remaining to lock in an answer that Eddie McGuire ruled as 'too late.'

hsNever has the catchphrase “Lock it in Eddie,” seemed more apt.

On Thursday’s episode of Hot Seat, the final contestant ‘Kerrie’ was playing for a big pile of cash: $50,000.

Her question (amusingly a Nine related question) needed her to determine the earliest host of Australia’s Funniest Home Videos from Jo-Beth Taylor, Kim Kilbey, Catriona Rowntree and Toni Pearen.

She had 45 seconds to answer.

After trying to choose between the four options she eventually answered Kim Kilbey -when host Eddie McGuire told her she didn’t lock in an answer in time.

While McGuire awkwardly checked with producers as to how to resolve the situation, Kerrie kept insisting she had 2 seconds left.

McGuire wasn’t sure whether to defer to the next contestant, or award her the $1000 consolation prize. Finally he was told she could indeed take the grand simply for sitting in the chair as the final contestant.

As it turned out, the answer was Jo-Beth Taylor who hosted from 1993 – 1997 (followed by Rowntree, Kilbey and Pearen).

But Kerrie’s insistence that she still had two seconds remaining (with glances to her monitor) raises some questions about the accuracy of the electronics.

Is what the contestant sees synced perfectly with producers or did the contestant make an error?

  1. Also Here It Is In total:

    Graham Kennedy (1989 – 1990)
    Jacki McDonald (1990 – 1991)
    Lisa Patrick (1992)
    Jo-Beth Taylor (February 1993 – August 1997)
Catriona Rowntree (August – November 1997, fill-in replacement for Taylor
    Kim Kilbey (February 1998 – November 2002)
    Toni Pearen (February 2003 – January 2008)

  2. On the Hot Seat show dated Tuesday July 14, the question was: What is the correct English contraction for “It is”. I would have thought the answer was “it’s”.The contestant locked in ” ’tis “.??

  3. I’ve noticed Eddie says “are you sure” “is that your final answer” a lot when the contestant has chosen the wrong answer…he’s handing them a lifeline…if only I’d understood that when I was a contestant in the first week! In all fairness to the woman, he can be very distracting and will ask for a final answer even when you have earlier said what you have chosen!

  4. I think all the answers are wrong.

Didn’t Graeme Kennedy original host the program ?

PErhaps it had a different title but it was exactly the same program.

    $0.02

  6. I watch this show and the thing that annoys me is the contestant says I’ll lock in c or whatever there answer is and then just before time is about to run out Eddie says quick I need an answer. Then the person has to rush and repeat what they will lock in with like 2 seconds left. I have noticed it a few times.

In regards to this the woman had the wrong answer anyway

  7. @newtaste it would make more sense if the contestant manually locked in the answer them selves, what would happen if eddie got confused and he locked in the wrong answer or if he didnt lock it in in time? also this would avoid contestants changing there answer at the last minute cause eddie keeps asking are they sure.

  8. I only saw the end of the show & as she asnwered incorrectly what does it matter & she was the last contestant for the night so it didn’t effect the ‘next’ person……………….the night or 2 prior to this show there was a guy who’d had several heart attacks answering questions & I am sure he said ‘lock it in’ after his choice of answer then Eddie kept at him about his answer so he said something different & ‘lock it it’ again, how can you do that,

  9. Half the problem with this show is Eddie waffles on with are you sure and etc when a Contestant says Lock In C: Elephant In The Room (or whatever), the number of times I have heard a contestant say what they want and Eddie waffle on then see time nearly run out and him push with come on we need an answer is frustrating (I have yelled at the TV at times and I have rarely done that in my life).

  10. I watched this episode, and couldn’t help but laugh. Even if you did have 2 seconds left would you leave it until that amount of time to make your decision? She would have been wrong anyway so either way she looses. When it got down to the wire Eddie was practically screaming at her to answer but she just sat there still thinking, so it’s her own fault she ran out of time.

However, because she didn’t answer in time I think the next contestant should have had a chance to answer and either win $1,000 or $50,000 instead of her.

  11. I don’t think it matters anyway, because if she locked in Kim Kilbey she would have lost. But then again, the grand could have gone to the next contestant. I love it when these things happen, it makes for entertaining TV. But does it really matter? it’s just one grand.

I think the contestants monitor would be in sync with the producers. They should have a buzzer after the time limit, so the contestant and audience knows that it’s time up.

  12. anyone in the audience sitting behind the contestant can see the screen the contestant uses (same with the other side of the audience for eddies screen) and seen what the countdown was at to assist with verifying the story, if it came to that.

  13. It probably didn’t help that when she did eventually answer,
she didn’t just say the letter or the actual answer, but said something
like “I’d like to lock in…” before the gist of the matter. That
preamble probably caused a discrepancy in the timing…

  14. I caught the end of this, and while we’ll never know what was on her screen, she certainly got in after Eddie’s final countdown.

She seemed like a bit of a sore loser until she found out she’s was incorrect anyway.
