MasterChef Australia: The Top 6

Andre Ursini is eliminated from TEN's reality series, leaving Justine, Chris, Poh, Julie, Lucas and Julia to battle it out.

mc6With Andre Ursini eliminated from MasterChef last night, the TEN reality series now has its Top 6, who will battle it out next week.

In a taste test on Sri Lankan curry, Andre incorrectly guessed curry powder as an ingredient, allowing Chris to proceed to the final week.

“I can’t believe that a curry would seal my fate in MasterChef,” Andre said. “It’s disappointing but if this is my journey so be it. I wanted to discover if my passion translated into the commercial kitchen and I know it does and I thank the competition for that. There is a real positive for me. I am going to be a chef.”

Gary Mehigan said: “We hope it was a positive experience. You were one of my favourites.”

George Calombaris added: “There is a soft spot I’ve got for you. I love your aggressive positive energy. Please don’t change that. If there was anyone I could bank money on going out there and becoming a chef like me and Gary, it’s you.”

Excitingly, Andre is now considering several opportunities, including a job offer from internationally renowned chef Emmanuel Stroobant of Saint Pierre in Singapore.

TEN now looks to a huge week for the cooking contest, as four contestants will be eliminated over five nights, leaving just two for the final on Sunday July 19th.

The remaining contestants, Justine, Poh, Chris and Julie are re-joined by Lucas and Julia to battle it out.

CHRIS BADENOCH: Beermason Chris from Melbourne has been one of the strongest competitors from the start. Often in the Top 3, Chris has consistently impressed the judges with his inventive style of cooking. Chris has cooked against celebrity chef Alex Herbert and has also been in the pressure test twice, most memorably in the croquembouche episode.

JULIA JENKINS: Food obsessed Julia from Melbourne (originally from Perth) proved that the amateur can do it, when she beat celebrity chef Peter Evans. Fast-tracking to the final week of MasterChef, Julia has spent the past 9 weeks being mentored by Peter, working in his restaurants in Sydney and Melbourne. With invaluable experience of service in professional kitchens under her belt, Julia comes back into MasterChef determined to win.

JULIE GOODWIN: This working mum of three from the Central Coast has been on an amazing journey. Conquering her nerves, Julie has survived several pressure tests and gone on to compete against two celebrity chef’s, the legendary Donovan Cook in Hong Kong, and Adrian Richardson. While she didn’t beat the chef, she has certainly earned her place in the Top 6.

JUSTINE SCHOFIELD: Ex sales executive Justine, from Sydney, consistently proved herself to be among the top of the crop, cooking against Matt Moran and Guy Grossi in celebrity chef challenges and leading her team to victory in several team challenges. Justine was eliminated on a stir fry challenge in Hong Kong after she was pitted against Julie. Returning to MasterChef, Justine has been firmly back on top and her most recent highlight has been winning the navy challenge, where contestants cooked lunch for 200 hungry sailors.

LUCAS PARSONS: Ex professional golfer Lucas, from Sydney, caused a stir in the competition when he beat celeb chef Ben O’Donoghue and fast-tracked to the final week of MasterChef Australia. Rejoining the contestants for a surprise challenge in Hong Kong, Lucas has also spent his time being mentored by celebrity chef Manu Feildel. Working in professional kitchens around Sydney also puts Lucas into the unknown quantity bracket with Julia.

POH LING YEOW: Poh was eliminated from the kitchen after the high octane wedding challenge. The contestants had just 12 hours to prepare a three course wedding menu, and Poh also elected herself to stay up all night making the cake. Her dishes suffered as a result and she was eliminated. Rejoining the competition with Justine and Tom, Poh’s cooking continues to impress the judges. Her abacus beads dish during the first round of auditions still remains one of the most popular dishes the judges have tasted.

  1. echoes Ryan’scomment.
Chris comes across like an arrogant so and so.
And he does not help himself with his choice of words.
Like others Ido not buy his line of “only done a 1 day cooking course blah blah blah..

  2. Its going to be some week for TEN, ratings blitz! Andre was my fave in these last weeks, I was hoping he’d make it to the finals, Well Done to the others – Id hate to see Chris win.

  3. David, i see you’ve re-named Chris as Justine:
“The remaining contestants, Justine, Poh, Justine and Julie are re-joined by Lucas and Julia to battle it out.”

  4. What?! I thought there were two left or something???

Sure, I’ve never seen the show, but I swear I was reading about “the final two” this week… (won’t this show finish already???)

  5. i dont think its fair that the contestants who won against the celeb chef get to come back to do masterclasses!! they are getting all the experience in the real world, in a real restaraunt. compared to the contestants left they get alot more experience.
i sooooooo dont want arrogant lemon sucker chris to win!!! he is so up himself and doesnt give a crap about anyone but himself. last night when he won he said im not celebrating cause i want to save my energy for the next challange!! all other contestants have said im not celebrating because this person has to go home! chris has previous expreience, you can tell! i want julie or justine to win~~~!!

  6. @ Paulz: Julia and Lucas (who won the celebrity chef challenges) went to Hong Kong to compete against the other five contestants, and were in the kitchen for the last few Masterclasses. I do agree however that next year, contestants who beat celebrity chefs have to attend Masterclasses in the minimum.

  7. I would be happy if Justine or Julia won, but I think I’m being turned by a pretty face, as I’m not sure if they necessarily deserve it.

I believe Chris has the best chance of winning, as he is consistently good, but then he’s the only one who has been playing to win from the start; The rest seem more excited about learning to be a Chef, which I admire more, on principle.

But what would send thrills of joy through my heart is if Julie won, as seeing her progress from doubts and nerves to becoming the first Australian MasterChef would be such a triumph for her.

I have no opinion on Lucas or Poh.

  8. Did anybody else notice that after Andre lost, he went in for a hug with Chris who completel;y dissed him by holding his hand out for a shake instead?
And I thought poor old Poh would break down in tears when Chris came back to the house.

  9. Jed, as much as I can’t stand Chris either, he knows his curries and cardamon pods are very distinctive looking, esp if you make a lot of curries like me. Chris sad to sad would probably have outlasted Andre in this test even if he didn’t use cardamon as an answer. But boy am I gunning for Chris to be the next one out…go away nose to tail man!!! And take your pig cheek and dirty leaf with you!!!

  10. Damn you Chris. And what a pr**k saying the ingredient that Andre changed to. Can’t stand him. He’s just a grumpy old man with no personality at all. I’ll be cheering for Poh and Justine now.

  11. Sorry to see him go after lasting this long and having to leave that way.

Good luck to the others trying to win this after the favouritism that Poh has been getting. I wonder if we’ll see another embarrassing “hail Poh” session from the judges before the show is over.

  12. loving masterchef as most others…andre was my favorite and i was surprised to hear Gary say that he was one of his favorites…i dont think any of the judges like andre and were gunning to get him off for weeks…chris is full of himself and i hope Poh , justine or julie win…..as some others have said ..its a mistake to send celebrity challenge winners off the show as the public couldnt give a toss about julia and to a lesser extent lucas

  13. I think it was a mistake to send away those 2 contestants who won against the celebrity chef. The audience has gotten to know the other 4 a lot better and I would feel pretty pissed if either the golfer or the young brunette ended up winning. I don’t think the viewing audience has anything invested in them.

For season 2, I think winners of the celebrity chef challenge should just get the free ride to finals week but still have to hang around with everyone else, doing the same challenges and what not.

  14. Go Poh, she’s the best.

Ten should spend a lot of time finding contestants for its next season next year. This show only works because of the contestants, so Ten need to get that right next year, or it will be a failure.

Ten must be very happy that they axed Big Brother, and replaced it with this. I remember last year that Nine were thinking of buying Big Brother. Interesting if they will do that next year and put it up against MasterChef. I hope they don’t though. As much as I am sick of Two and a Half Men, I would rather watch that than BB.

  15. This is so unfair. Julia and Poh should not be there. It is so Unfair.

It made me lose so much fair in this show. Now its just like TBL with its ‘twists’.

Twist me again and i’m gone.

  16. Any cook should know that curry powder is a mixture of a number of ground curry seeds and therefore to just be so generic as to say curry powder when he should have been more specific cost him the competition. Silly boy! Glad all the 4 girls are left, all we need now is to get rid of Chris and Lucas and the competition is on! I liked Andre mind you.

  17. I didn’t know only 2 would be left by Sunday. I really hope the girls make it (Justine, Poh and Julie) Chris annoys me, Lucas isn’t that great his win was pure fluke and Julia, well I have had nothing invested in her as she hasn’t really been on the show; and she wasn’t one of my favourites.

I really want Poh to win!! Loving Masterchef I’ll be lost when it goes off air haha.

  18. This is certainly going to be an interesting week on MasterChef, one which I am really looking forward to. Fingers crossed that Chris is one of the first eliminated – i will be very disappointed if he takes out the title of ‘MasterChef’.

Already the internet is very active in relation to ‘Spoiler’ reports, listing the winner in various places. It will be interesting to see how accurate these reports are. Time will tell, and yes my lips are sealed.

Also great to see that Andre has been quickly snapped up by Martini Ristorante on the Parade at Norwood, SA.
