MasterChef: Chris eliminated. It’s Poh v Julie!

Beer merchant and hot favourite Chris Badenoch has divided viewers, but the judges have dashed his dream of becoming the winner of MasterChef Australia.

cbMasterChef Australia‘s first finale will be an all-girl affair following the elimination of Chris Badenoch from the TEN cooking contest.

41yo Melbourne resident Badenoch was considered a front-runner for the title, but was cut from the show after a lengthy cook-off with their own inventive dishes.

Joining the judges was cookbook queen Donna Hay.

It was a contentious decision given that he was defeated by the ever-popular Julie who did not complete all her dishes.

But beer merchant Badenoch has been a divisive contestant, with many fans of the show having difficulty with his abrupt style and attire. He has also been the subject of press articles, including as late as today, on his romantic life. The perils of reality television.

Matt Preston said to Badenoch: “You have been the competition’s most consistent performer but today let youself down. The execution of these three dishes let you down. Tragically that’s enough to send you home. We know we’ll be drinking your beer and eating your food in your beer bar in 6 months time. And there will be a beer book. No doubt. Thanks for the pigs head, for the hat, for the dry Melbourne humour. We’ll see you around.”

George Calombaris said: I’ve never said this to a man before but I love you!”

Gary Mehigan said: “You’ve impressed me and George many many times.”

Badenoch said: “I’m tired, I’m strung out and the pressure is ridiculous. To get to this point and not make the final two is devastating. It means everything to me.

“It’s hugely disappointing.” Chris said. “But Top 3 is an achievement and you will be eating in my establishment sooner rather than later. This experience has turned my life on its head and I won’t forget this. My future is bright, full of beer, and full of food, and I can’t wait.”

mca38yo Julie Goodwin from the NSW Central Coast will face off against 35yo Poh Ling Yeow from Adelaide for the inaugural title on Sunday night.

  1. Nevermind Masterchef the makers of this program must think its viewers are MasterChumps if they think we are going to swallow that Julie won fairly.

In our house Julie has been about the most popular contestant. Until the final week we accepted that she had fairly scraped through many tests. But this week even the hated Chris was thought to have been harshly treated.

One contestant who did a bad job was told their dish would be sent back by a customer so we we won`t judge it. Would they send back plates that had clearly not been plated out fully? I know I would.

Why don`t they just tell us that they are looking for a popular face to push supermarket products and being able to cook comes a distant second.

  2. oh my gosh
julie won are you kidding me !

as Cheldus said, talk about a friggen sympathy vote
the only reason she won is for tv ratings !

did you see how the judges came around and told her how the chocolate was sticking to the bench
then come back half an hour later and tell her, the sorbet is to grainy !
didnt see poh getting anyhelp !

    poh deserved to win
    by far !

  3. Well done girls you have made it!! I was surprised in the last episode about the decision, but we were not there to judge and taste it.

It sounds like from the judges comments that Julie despite not “plating up properly” had the tastiest food on the table and the food that people would most like to eat and enjoy – which is why she has gone through to the final.

Of course she has had good weeks and bad weeks – but there has always been someone much worse that week which is why she is still rightly there!!

I have to say i think she is brilliant! She represents real women and real kitchens and thats what we want.

I love the fact that Po and Julie are the warmest friendliest people on the show and they are the ones that are the winners!! I want to aspire to learn the recipes of a really lovely cook that has good and interesting technique ( Julie and Po when they do this well they are real winners).

I am glad that this competition has been judged on taste all the way through and not just on confidence.

Go girls, hope the final is just as exciting.

    Good luck to you both.

  4. Chris’s beef cheeks looked like a dogs dinner! Pretty much how he presents, I know whos food I would prefer to eat! Guess it all came down to the taste of what was on the plate. I think Justine should have made it to the last 3!

  5. We all know it’s Julie who won even that she forgot the stuffing. Fancy going somewhere were she cooks and she forgets the main ingredients Yuk. No thanks as for Poh she can’t even cook a decent asian dish we all saw that. So as for the Chefs or shall i say they think they are chefs they would learn a lot from a first year apprentice they should go back to the kitchen and start from scratch as a first year apprentice that would improve maybe how things should be done.Donna Hayes??????Joke

  6. I am a Mum, 50 with kids….. I wouldn’t vote for Julie, nice as she seems, lamb, no stuffing, I could cook better any day.,.in that time she should have completed one good looking dish at least. Chris plated 3 a good looking dishes that should have counted for something. Poh is the best cook left but when does elimination mean elimination, bring Chris back next week, give him 2 chances like Poh…. I watched the biggest loser and bringing back eliminated contestants is not fair, as a viewer it is just confusing because you have moved on. A lot of people, including myself lost interest in the show after Chris went, in fact I skipped my first episode. Guest judges should be “guests” Donna Hay was really dominant, it was clear all along she did not like Chris at all and favoured Julie, I think the other judges lost the plot letting her have so much on input into a single challenge.

  7. I digress a little…. Correct me if I am wrong David, but isn’t this the highest number of comments ever posted on a particular subject since the start of TV Tonight.!!! Big Brother did not get this much feedback.

If so, well done…not only is Channel 10 breaking all records with the ratings, so is TV Tonight.

You have done a great job David with TV Tonight.

  8. Re: Chewy

Get some standards! You might think that uncooked, unfinished basic food is great! I personally believe that the show has had far better cooks eliminated with Julie being given a free ride time and time again. What the hell Chewy…. are you one of her kid she keeps sobbing about?

  9. Chris’s downfall came before he had even started, namely having to impress Donna Hay. Julie appealed instantly to her as their demographic and styles are similar. You could read it all over her body language. I for one have lost all credibility with her and will look for other options regarding cook books – shame.

It was disgraceful that Julie was selected over Chris. She didn’t plate up and being a food photographer myself, Chris’s dish looked much more interesting and better styled.

Once again Julie used tears and emotiveness to persuade the judges to let her through. Chris on the other hand, has an unsteering determination, a thorough and clear vision, plus his idea is great and will encourage a lot of blokes into the kitchen. However as he couldn’t articulate it clearly (and without Julie’s uncontrolled emotion), it never won favour with the judges.

I am also not happy that some of the contestants were reintroduced – is this a competition or a gameshow?? Having said that, I hope Poh wins it as I would rather eat (and photograph) her style of cooking than Julie’s bland and boring tripe.

  10. The judges have made decisions on who wins challenges and who is eliminated based on the taste on dishes. As much as we can comment on how individuals how handle the process of cooking them and what they actually look like, unfortunately we do not get to taste them. You can’t honestly say whose dishes tastes the best or worst – we have to rely on the judges comment, of which we are only seeing an edited version of them to give some suspense being someone is eliminated.

  11. Go Julie… I like eating bland second-rate food… I eat it at home all the time. I am just like you… a two-bit cook. I also buy cookbooks with boring recipes in them, just like the recipes in your proposed cookbook. Also, when I have problems and cant get my act together, I start crying, panicing and for maximum sympathy, I talk about my family and the kids.

Oh, Yes, I forgot… I sometimes always have cute animals and small babies near my kitchen, so that if the food is unfinished or a boring sludge… the cuteness will always right any wrongs for me…

Julie, you remind me about my wholesome cooking…

  12. I have watched the show, wasnt keen on Chris as he appeared to be on TV, but its about cooking isnt it? This was meant to be the 3 dishes you would put on the cover of your book, that represent you, your pinnacle. Geroge said ” They not only have to taste great they have to look fantastic” Donna Hay said “it doesnt matter how it tastes, if it doesnt look good its going back to the kitchen”.

Now we cant judge on taste, but underseasoned and overcooked chicken (George’s description), 4 slices of lamb with 3 lonely potatoes on steamed spinach ( 2 minutes in teh microwave), no stufing or sauce, and a piece of cake by itself, no sauce, cream, icing, not even dusted with sugar are not dishes any honest person on this site would pay for at a restuarant. Anyone could have cooked what Julie did, or didnt. I found it odd during the week, Julies served up “muddle pie” (pastry with unset custard) and a piece of fish the judges couldnt taste due to being totally raw. She admitted not knowing anything that was in Malaysian food, but she kept winning. I wouldnt buy Chris’s book, Donna Hay certainly wouldnt as she was sneering at his food before she even tasted it, and there would be no need to buy Julies ( Lamb, potato and spinach). Look in a Donna Hay book, anything look like what Julie served? But the target audience of middle aged women with children is where the money is in cook books, and i guess Julie is it.

The real loser will be Julie, as she would know that she didnt deserve to win. If she wins the title, and i am assuming she will, there will be many thousands of people baggin her for it being rigged. And thats embarrassing for her. Oh, and by the way, the only people that care about your family, is your family. When people are thinking fondly about what Julie said about her family, they are thinking of their own family.

  13. Episode 67 Julie serves a lovely puddle custard pie with breaking crust
Episode 68 Julie serves raw ling fish.
Episode 69 Julie manages to finish the cake but the crust was too hard. Judges made favourable comments about how lovely it was however.
Episode 70 Julie makes a roast. Stuffing falls out. Fails to finish dessert and struggles to dish up the three dishes.

    Other points to note:
She sweats. Is disorganised. Her presentation generally stinks. She came in cooking a roast, gets to the finals cooking another roast. Incredible improvement don’t you think?

You know what is also funny. Donna Haye or whatever her name is, made comments about the colour brown and yet remarkably all of Julies dishes would look great on the cover of a cookbook. Apparently because you can get away with it. Good one!

Masterchef indeed. It is rigged. Just accept it.

  14. For all those Julie fans … you must be a mother. Imagine what would happen if they actually eliminated her. All those viewers! Not to mention the mum’s who adore her and will go and buy her cook book.

Rigged! Is there seriously any doubt about it. The cake where you couldn’t cut through the crust, the dishes last night that she couldn’t serve up. The panic mad sweat whilst cooking. The amateurish appearance of her dishes. The falling apart pie, not to mention the puddle pie.

Yes … A MasterChef indeed. I would definately want her working in my kitchen.

Then look at the imagination of her dishes. She started with Roast and ended with a roast. Huge improvement there.

Get with it people. It’s rigged and there is no doubt about it. Stop being so deluded.

  15. Ok, so i also want to know, where were all of Chris’ friends?????? can anyone find out why they were not shown? perhaps he refused taping because he was so angry that he left the show. i found him arrogant and he didnt win because his food looked ugly and would not sell on the front cover of the cook book. i also think it was rigged a little and biased towards julie. oh well, thats reality tv!

  16. Go poh i have some stale cake at home i should put that on a plate and enter.Julie i am sick of people saying i am doing it for the kids bull.If you are our first masterchef what a load of rubbish. To be a chef you have to strong and calm under pressure julie not.

  17. I wa hooked on this show, but yesterday I just got so disappointed and angry! Was I the only one? I can not believe what happened. Chris didn’t live up to his usual high standards, but Julie lived up to her usal crappy and inconsistent self. Why wasn’t she eliminated weeks ago.

  18. I’m glad the final 2 is Poh & Julie. I don’t like Chris at all even though he’s a great cook. Julie did have the vision cleare, the winner is going to release a cookbook as one of the prize. I’m hoping Julie will win, she deserved it, Poh is a great cook but it is kinda unfair that she got a 2nd chance back without even having to do a cooking challenge for a chance back. But she has brought some unique food to the competition.

  19. ps I would rather eat Julie’s unfinished dishes rather than Poh’s freaky dishes any day – who wants to eat rotten 100 day old eggs anyway?

  20. Wow! Julie you are an amazing woman, you have had to sacrafice seeing your wonderful family to chase a dream and show your children, that whatever path you take in life you can achieve a dream. You have improved such a lot since we first saw you on the show, and just because you were unable to plate all the food last night, you still achieved it all, and like Matt said , if you hadn’t been interrupted for those extra couple of minutes of chatting to you, you would have been able to finish, so well done, and I cant wait to buy your cookbook, also Poh good luck as well. You go girls…

  21. “Good on you Julie! I think Julie is a great example of what mums are doing in the kitchens all over Australia”

Yer but this show is called masterchef and not a show about how if you are a mum that can barely cook can win.

Julie wins cause all the fatty’s out there will buy her book and the station knows it.
