MasterChef’s nine minutes of excess fat

MasterChef's 90 minute episode actually ran from 7pm to 8:39pm. Yet it was pre-recorded. Why?

mchqToday many viewers are venting their anger over the decision to eliminate Chris Badenoch from MasterChef Australia.

Readers on this site, as well as the forums on the official website, are unhappy that having delivered consistent dishes he was banished from the finale over a cookbook vision. In truth the judges weren’t happy with the taste of his final meal, but as readers point out, Julie had not even finished plating and has seen highs and lows all week. Alas, that’s life in reality television.

Many are unhappy with guest judge Donna Hay having such influence at a crucial stage. Indeed, there could well be reason next year to consider “blind judging” across the final week. As successful and as excellent as the show has been, it has not been without some questionable bending of the rules, most notably bringing back eliminated contestants.

Meanwhile TEN should also be slapped for screening the show from 7pm to 8:39pm. But the show was pre-recorded.

Does the word ‘edit’ no longer equate in this country?

It was already boosted from its 30 and 60 minute editions, padded out with flashbacks to character journeys of the final three. And still it couldn’t come in under 90minutes…

On Sunday night we will all be suckered in by 120 minutes as Poh and Julie face off in the pre-recorded finale.

What are the chances Glee will actually start on time, please?

  1. What a shame!

How on earth could those judges think that Julie is the best cook out of all those previously eliminated – impossible!! She would not have even plated anything up in the final three cook-off, was only for Chris constantly telling her just to put it on the plate. Also, she couldn’t even make a cheese cake two episodes ago – how on earth could she possibly be the best!!!! grrrrrr!!!!!

Have to say…. Master Chef will end up just like Big Brother….

Major let-down to see Julie win just because the judges took such a liking to the ‘little aussie battler’ type.

Will not be buying her book!

  2. Very simple explanation why it ran over…

And it happens all the time.

How to make more $$$$ out of a Network’s Top rating program?

Answer – make it longer – longer program = more ad breaks per program = more ad spots to sell per ad break = more $$$$$.

The ACMA lets them get away with it as they are paying them a licence fee which is calculated on the network’s ad income.

  3. Who is Jed the Rat, calling idiots just because we give our opinions I believe this is a free country and we are all allowed to share a comment just like he does. The idiots are the ones who voted Chris off the show and let the most incompetend cooks stay.Stay with the facts Jed.

  4. who cares on all fronts
    the show is lame anyway
wake up Australia, just look at all the pre packaged and pre prepared foods we have on offer, that’s what we should be embracing !

  5. Chris’s beef cheeks looked like a dogs dinner. Nothing to tempt the appetite there! neither had the pigs cheek. Yuk
Julie judged on what she managed to get on the plate. Her time management skills are terrible though.

  6. The Masterchef many of us have been brought up on has a totally diferent concept to this programme. I am surprised John Tarode did a guest appearance on the Australian one. Did he know It would not be about cooking but which contestant was the most marketable.

  7. Well said Blake, couldn’t agree more. Masterchef was on the front page of the Daily Tele Friday but who wants to bet that in two years people will be too ashamed to admit they watch it any more a la Big Brother?

  8. Masterchef can’t win. There are always going to be accusations of favouritism because ones favourite is booted out.

Masterchef was well received when it first came on, but the more popular and praise it received, the more others felt like they needed to do something to bring it back to earth.

Because Chris was favourite to win too early in the game, it annoyed people that the ending was going to be predictable, so they started their ridiculing.

Same with Susan Boyle. She got too popular so she unfortunately didn’t win when needed.

It may seem we just like to support the underdog, but really, we just hate it when someone is too liked or well-received.

Big Brother: Sara-Marie, Jess, Camilla, Vesna
Idol: Anthony Callea, Ricki-Lee, Matt Corby, Lee Harding
    SYTYCDA: Rhys, Charlie

I don’t know. Maybe deep down, a lot of Australians are quite cynical. Shame that soon, people will sigh when they hear Masterchef

  9. In the US, across hundreds of networks, local stations and cable channels – every single show starts boom on the dot at 8, 830, 9, 930, 10 etc. It’s amazing to watch the clockwork precision

It is law by the FCC

Perhaps the ACMA should do the same in Australia.

    Easy! Problem solved.

  10. David we are definetly already there… the news starts bang on 6 o’clock but everything after the News runs over-time. ACA, TT and Neighbours always go past 7pm, and its like a snowball effect the over-run just builds up as the night goes on.

Ten aren’t quite as bad as Nine and Seven but all 3 of them are guilty. At least Ten does reflect changes in their EPG but that doesn’t really mean much to most viewers.

And then TV Week wonders why nobody uses their TV guide anymore, that’s because networks like their own network partner Nine have bastardised prime-time to such an extent that a printed TV guide is barely an indication of what’s actually going to get shown.

  11. The EPG had it shown that it was going to 8.39pm (as i was recording Rush). So technically it’s gone to when its schduled, Story about nothing here.

    1. So why were Rush ads promoted as 8:30? Why was 8:30 the time locked in with Pagemasters when EPGs are the only ones accurate?

I actually haven’t singled out TEN, this site comments on programming issues, including overruns on a regular basis. I found it very ironic that the show was extended and even then couldn’t finish to the time in which it had been allocated. Not good when you are re-launching a new drama either. It’s understandable when a show is live, but not pre-recorded. Was it the fault of the production company? Probably not. A few more ads snuck in I expect. If we end up with every pre-recorded show running overtime, or dragging out with extra ads heaven help us. Maybe we’re already there…

  12. Why didn’t people watch it live?
Why didn’t people watch the catch up on ten.com.au?
Why didn’t people watch with TIVO?
Why didn’t people use a VCR to record?

Stop complaning just because you missed out on the ending because you used a PVR to skip ads.

  13. What was good is now bad.

Lets face it you will all watch the elimination, and then be back here whining about this and that and whatever.

And life goes on you may buy the book you may not.
You may watch the next series you may not

We will all know what to expect next time wont we.

  14. Gotta laugh at all the people saying they’re gonna boycott the finale. What’s that gonna accomplish. 30 idiots not watching out fo 3 million people is not gonna damage the ratings too much i think.
