Power(ball) to Troy Ellis

Updated: Seven confirms Troy Ellis will host Thursday's $80M Powerball draw after concerns he would be replaced by Sonia Kruger.

teUPDATE: Seven confirms Ellis staying put for the draw.

The Seven Network will announce today whether Powerball host Troy Ellis will host tomorrow night’s $80M draw, or whether he is being dumped in favour of Sonia Kruger.

Ellis has hosted the even over five years.

For its recent $106M draw recently, Seven replaced James Sherry with Kruger for the occasion.

Yesterday on FOX FM, Ellis’ co-hosts Matt Tilley and Jo Stanley lobbied in his favour to be retained. A number of personalities phoned in their suppor including Sherry, plus the Lord Mayor Robert Doyle and Seven’s own news presenters Jennifer Keyte and Peter Mitchell.

Even a Tattersalls spokesperson spoke of Ellis in high regard, but conceded it would be a joint decision.

So how about it, Seven?

Seven is expected to announce its host today.

  1. My mum hates the dragfest of waiting for her lotto results. If I’m over and wanting to watch the footy instead I do this. Go onto the Tattersalls website. The results are usually there by 8:30pm

  2. Neon Kitten said: You will *never* see gambling results spammed over prime time TV anywhere else, I am sure.

Make a bet? YouTube WLS7 Chicago or WABC7 New York and look at their news broadcasts, the lottery results and stupid graphics are all over their news screens.

  3. IMO it’s just a ratings stunt by FOX FM, the Matt & Jo show, Tatts Lotto and Ch 7.
What better way for both programs to promote themselves for free.

People are still going to tune in to see if they won the jackpot.
The Matt & Jo show quality just keeps going down hill.

  4. @Neon: it’s probably better to have the numbers displayed on screen for a few seconds rather than the UK practice of stretching out a lotto draw over a whole one-hour of prime-time 🙂

  5. This archaic practice of creating a 60-second TV show to broadcast what basically amounts to a moment in a crass bogan casino is, surely, a relic of the past we’ll never be rid of.

I used to curse these things a lot more until Seven had the wisdom to can the live Tattslotto draws – and instead plaster the resulting numbers in garish, two-dollar-parma colours over the bottom third of the screen of multi-million-dollar flagship drama shows.

You will *never* see gambling results spammed over prime time TV anywhere else, I am sure. But at least with these ballfest minutes it’s just a simple case of ad-skip, ad-skip, bye. Unless you’re unfortunate enough to have a Freeview PVR, of course.

  6. It’s pretty clear, the network considers using a more high profile star because the audience for the draw is anticipated to be around 3-3.5million viewers. Naturally, it makes sense to use a network asset that is involved with other shows to in turn promote the person and those shows.

That said – somebody from Seven (I didn’t catch who) told the Matt and Jo Show this morning that Troy would be hosting the draw tomorrow night.

  7. I didn’t even realise the networks produce the lottery draws – I thought they were done in-house by whichever lottery company is operating the lottery, and then sent over to the station for broadcast. Intriguing.
